(Chertoff) U.S. Must Be Prepared For What's Coming -
... thousands dead from Katrina

CBC News - 04 Sep 2005

For the first time, a U.S. federal official has acknowledged what many have feared. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Levitt said Sunday the death toll from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath is in the thousands.

"It's clear to me that this has been sickeningly difficult and profoundly tragic," Leavitt said.

Earlier Sunday Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said, "We need to prepare the country for what's coming." Chertoff declined to estimate the number of dead but conceded that an untold number of people could have perished in swamped homes and temporary shelters where many went for days without food or water.

"What's going to happen when we de-water and remove the water from New Orleans is we're going to uncover people who died, maybe hiding in houses, got caught by the flood, people whose remains are going to be found in the streets ... It is going to be about as ugly a scene as I think you can imagine."

The consequences of the Bush admin's failures are about to become horribly apparent, and all rubbish like Chertoff can think to do is attempt to manage the upcoming reaction. No wonder they've called out the Bush National Spin Guard.

1. And their bodies should be planted on new nationalized ground
*'s ranch in Texas.

I have done a trial run of the #s for NO alone ...... 20,000 would be
a low number.

I wonder how that cake was?

15. Similar to what the Union did to Robert E Lee's estate...
...during the Civil War. His estate is now known as Arlington National Cemetery.

They're deep in preparation to blame all of it on the victims.

You don't really think real bright folks are going to associate with him do you? Very sad, when you have a not to bright person running things they are going to bring their handicapped friends with them and really screw things up.

5. Chertoff better prepare HIMSELF for what's coming
once the official death toll is released- indictments for criminal negligence.

But he's probably betting on a medal.

7. Earth to Chertoff: WHY weren't you prepared
for what just happened? HUH?
Maybe then we wouldn't have to prepare ourselves for the fact, in our words, that "..we're going to uncover people who died, maybe hiding in houses, got caught by the flood, people whose remains are going to be found in the streets ... It is going to be about as ugly a scene as I think you can imagine."

IDIOT.... I keep hearing Dylan's song "Idiot Wind" in my head:

People see me all the time and they just can't remember how to act
Their minds are filled with big ideas, images and distorted facts.
Even you, yesterday you had to ask me where it was at,
I couldn't believe after all these years, you didn't know me better than that
Sweet lady.

Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your mouth,
Blowing down the backroads headin' south.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I ran into the fortune-teller, who said beware of lightning that might strike
I haven't known peace and quiet for so long I can't remember what it's like.
There's a lone soldier on the cross, smoke pourin' out of a boxcar door,
You didn't know it, you didn't think it could be done, in the final end he won the wars
After losin' every battle.

I woke up on the roadside, daydreamin' 'bout the way things sometimes are
Visions of your chestnut mare shoot through my head and are makin' me see stars.
You hurt the ones that I love best and cover up the truth with lies.
One day you'll be in the ditch, flies buzzin' around your eyes,
Blood on your saddle.

Idiot wind, blowing through the flowers on your tomb,
Blowing through the curtains in your room.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

It was gravity which pulled us down and destiny which broke us apart
You tamed the lion in my cage but it just wasn't enough to change my heart.
Now everything's a little upside down, as a matter of fact the wheels have stopped,
What's good is bad, what's bad is good, you'll find out when you reach the top
You're on the bottom.

I noticed at the ceremony, your corrupt ways had finally made you blind
I can't remember your face anymore, your mouth has changed, your eyes
don't look into mine.
The priest wore black on the seventh day and sat stone-faced while the building
burned.
I waited for you on the running boards, near the cypress trees, while the springtime
turned Slowly into autumn.

Idiot wind, blowing like a circle around my skull,
From the Grand Coulee Dam to the Capitol.
Idiot wind, blowing every time you move your teeth,
You're an idiot, babe.
It's a wonder that you still know how to breathe.

I can't feel you anymore, I can't even touch the books you've read
Every time I crawl past your door, I been wishin' I was somebody else instead.
Down the highway, down the tracks, down the road to ecstasy,
I followed you beneath the stars, hounded by your memory
And all your ragin' glory.

I been double-crossed now for the very last time and now I'm finally free,
I kissed goodbye the howling beast on the borderline which separated you from me.
You'll never know the hurt I suffered nor the pain I rise above,
And I'll never know the same about you, your holiness or your kind of love,
And it makes me feel so sorry.

Idiot wind, blowing through the buttons of our coats,
Blowing through the letters that we wrote.
Idiot wind, blowing through the dust upon our shelves,
We're idiots, babe.
It's a wonder we can even feed ourselves.

8. Everything that has been seen so far ...
... will pale when stacked against the images of rescue workers dragging out the bodies of the thousands who died in this disaster. And when it is discovered how many died from the storm itself as opposed to those who died from later neglect, all bets are off.

It will be like nothing we've ever seen before.

9. We are NOT going to see those pictures.
That's wy the fight to "federalize"t is going on.
The governor does NOT want it to be turned into martial law, where essentially, the armed forces take over the whole operation.
If that happens, we will not get a correct body count or a full accounting of what is found.
I.E.: the corpses being returned in the cloak of darkness instead of to honor.

The public's "beautiful mind" will be saved from these images and facts.

And we will never know the hundreds that die scattered in shelters throughout the US of various diseases and injuries directly related to Katrina, and being left abandoned by the :powers that be".

10. Not Sure I Agree
There is an army of media in New Orleans. Bush and his handlers might have been able to disguise what has been going on in Iraq, but short of forcing every news organization in the world to leave New Orleans at gun point, this spectacle will be seen.

This disaster is a domestic disaster. The effect of all those dead being being taken from their houses will devastate the Bush regime.

11. The media won't show it
Oh, there will be some body bags here and there but the media will not show the bodies left decaying in homes and in the streets for days on end. People are already complaining that the footage is too raw for American consumption, and these are just images of bodies covered in sheets at the Superdome.

12. My 13 year old son just saw a body floating in the water and said...
"Why are they showing that on TV? (cause he was sickened) I had to explain to him "Because this is the largest natural disaster ever to hit the US, and people need to understand that it is still going on. People are still trapped in their houses with no food or water. People are still dying. I know it is painful to see, but we all need to see this and understand that unless we do better, more people will be dying. We need to make sure this NEVER happens again."

I'm so emotional, I hope I havn't scarred him for life.

13. This story has been a ratings bonanza for news orgs
Rasmussen today says:

"Interest in the story us extraordinarily high. Eighty-eight percent of Americans say they are closely following news stories about the tragedy, including 59% who are following it 'very closely.'"

http://www.rasmussenreports.com/2005/Katrina.htm

I can't see our ratings starved cable news networks walking away from this, much less the equally distressed network newsies. The worse it gets, the more people watch.

I understand the doubt, but I believe in this case there will be little the Bushies can do except spin.

14. This Statement
just makes me shake my head. "The country" has been watching this situation unfold for days and has to have a pretty good idea exactly what to expect. It's Chertoff et al. who don't appear to have a flippin' clue what's going on.

24. How many deaths can be blamed on George W. Bush at this point?
From his lethal-injection trigger happy days as governor, to the LIHOP/MIHOP tragedy of 9/11, to Iraq, and now Katrina... has one American ever been responsible for so many lives lost?

This man shouldn't even be in the history books as president at this point. He doesn't deserve the honor. He's not even fit to clean Nixon's wet ass with his tongue. Disgusting.
