BRUSSELS (Reuters) - The top U.S. envoy to NATO thanked European allies on Monday for generous pledges of support in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, which has devastated New Orleans and U.S. Gulf Coast states.
NATO said on Sunday it was coordinating offers of help from its 26 members after Washington asked it and the European Union for help in dealing with the crisis, which has left hundreds and possibly thousands dead.
"The United States has been enormously grateful for the outpouring of support, both emotional and concrete, from allies over the past week," Victoria Nuland, the U.S. ambassador to NATO, said in a statement issued in Brussels.
"We have had specific offers from almost every ally... This once again proves the effectiveness and resilience of this alliance and its value for the American people and all allies."
