2. He's wants to control the state -
if he gets Gov. Blanco to sign over her power, the feds can move in and claim New Orleans as their own. They will make all the decisions. :scared:

9. Maybe that's why
he had, as has been posted elsewhere, such an ugly look on his puss after his "90 minute meeting" with Blanco. His handlers sent him in there to get her to sign on the dotted line and he failed. If they want to get control of NO IMO it's because of the port and the oil.

3. Two words
martial law ... if he has control, he can institute it at will. I'm wondering if once the authority is signed over, how hard it would be to get it BACK from the White House. I think the fear is that those "emergency powers" would be kept indefinitely and set a precedent.

Emperor Palpatine, anyone?

15. also the National Security Personnel System
which will strip bargaining and due process rights from Federal Employees...Bush has been trying to get that signed into law. So far a judge has stopped action on it. If it ever gets elevated to the SCOTUS, there go federal rights. The Bushies can take everyone out and shoot them, for all the vagueness in the wording of the "system."

This is a national emergency!~

28. Little snippit I heard this weekend about martial law/refineries
on the FEMA/NO scanner.

Guy 1: Hey I have a guy here who says that the president has declared martial law and that you guys (FEMA) have taken over the refineries. I told him that your offices *are* located in the refineries. He says you all have taken control of the prisoners, also (?). Can you confirm this, over.

FEMA guy: long, long,long pause

Guy 1: (repeats the questions)

FEMA: Our offices are in the refinery.

No ther transmission was heard between these 2 guys and the person who was asking Guy #1 these questions was never identified on the radio.

This all may mean nothing but I thought that I would share it anyway.

If he takes over now, he can try to claim that all the initial screw-ups were the fault of Kathleen Blanco and other state and local authorities, and that things didn't start to get straightened out until HE came on the scene! Blanco isn't falling for it.

7. So that NOLA residents cannot reclaim their property.
If they federalize this, FEMA then rebuilds NOLA into something NOLA has never been, a gentrified, Disneyfied, plastic replica of the old NOLA. Best of all, it turns LA red.

You watch, NOLA residents will lose the rights to their property.

17. This is the first step towards declaring martial law across the U.S.
With the a sizeable chunk of the military in Iraq or otherwise abroad, he's not going to have much of a choice.

I wonder how the soldiers in Iraq feel... I've got several friends over there. I wish they'd give me a call. What must it be like for them to watch their Commander-in-Chief fuck up so badly, while they're fighting a bloody conflict to "defend" America?

31. Maybe, maybe not.
You saw how easily the cowboys with M-16s were shooting "looters". They opened fire on their fellow citizens who posed no threat to them. I would hope that most soldiers wouldn't turn on their countrymen at the direction of a madman, but you never know. More terrible things have happened than that...

25. I wouldn't be so sure to assume he just wants control of the Guard
Maybe he has some other intentions that go beyond using the Guard in New Orleans. From what I have read today, it sounded like he wanted certain "powers" to be turned over to him from the Governor of Louisiana, Blanco. I don't want to sound paranoid but I don't put these kinds of things past the Bush Administration.

What do you all know? Am I totally off base here? I could have misinterpreted this, but that was my impression.

26. Because once Martial Law is declared FEMA can do some really scary
things.

They can seize and control all media. They can seal borders, decided where to rebuild and who gets to live there. They can replace governmental officials. They can seize oil, gas and mineral resources. They can take control of agriculture.

I think he wants a test case. And it wouldn't hurt that they would be in charge of all communications coming out of New Orleans.

34. Then there needs to be a people's uprising
As long as the states maintain their Guard units, it would be the NG against the US Air Force, Army, Navy, Marines and Coast Guard.

Our US military would NOT going to attack Americans, would they? Yes, the NG killed US students at Kent State, but haven't we evolved since then?

46. If they can control all media, I assume that means the internet(s)
also, which has been their biggest problem with brainwashing people. God , I hope Gov. Blanco doesn't cave in. But why can't he take control of Miss or Alabama and do the same thing? I assume it's because even the Repug governors won't turn over their control either, which should be pointed out by the media.

incompetent. This has to be intentional.

Turning away water, gas, generators, cutting communication lines, seizing equipment from contractors.

WHy???

To hamper progress, and create conditions ripe for Federal takeover.

which is probably why Jebbie hasn't been asked to sign over his NG.

I think Bush et al should be arrested right now, for expecting Blanco to sign over control of LA to the federal govt., on the eve of a SCOTUS states' rightist's death no less. This wreaks of impending nationwide martial law.

45. Power and Money, That's Why, Remake Lousiana into a BIG BLUE State
Here is my theory:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=132x2064595

Cant be that he wants to cover up how badly FEMA fucked up. He can get his lackeys at FOX and CNN and the WSJ to spin the news to reflect any "truth" Karl Rove wants. Why does * want the Feds to take over the Katrina ravaged area so badly?

Could it be money? There will be a lot of money spent rebuilding. Right now, the states will control who gets to rebuild roads, utilities, buildings. They will probbaly choose local builders and hire local workers if at all possible. If the feds take over, * can hire Halliburton and his buddies from Texas and anyplace else he chooses.

Then, there is the possibility that * would prefer not to rebuild low cost housing. Maybe he has visions of turning the Gulf Coast into a playground for the upper middle class and rich. Get rid of that pesky Democratic vote. Keep just enough workers housing to keep the oil, shipping and fishinh industries going but keep out the rest of the rabble.

Of course, if * takes over, he will bring in Guiliani, and let him hold press conferences in preparation for a presidential run in 2008. Or maybe brother Jeb. Or both. There is a Bush family dream ticket.

However, what * does not seem to realize is that Blanco and a whole lot of southerners (including up til now GOP voting southerners in Missisippi and Alabama) would rather drown in dirty swamp water and get eaten by gaters than see Yankees take over the south again as it did for 30 years during Reconstruction.

So, Rove and *, keep getting on MSNBC and talking about how you want to federalize the relief effort in the South. Keep bad mouthing local government efforts. The people of the South have seen the occupation of Iraq. They have your number. They are going to vote Democratic in 2006.
