Some states to roll back their gas tax to make gas more "affordable"?
Just reported now on CNN. If the retail price of gasoline set by supply and demand, then reducing the gas tax would have very little effect on the price of gasoline, and possibly no effect at all. Want to reduce the price of gasoline? Then increase the supply or reduce the demand. I don't see any other way.

1. the effect it has is those taxes are used to pay for something important..
...like funds needed to pay for housing to displaced people forced to leave Louisiana.

2. Georgia has suspended its gas taxes for September
Gov. Perdue said it'd lower prices by about $0.15 per gallon. So far it seems to have worked. On Friday, the few stations in my area that had regular had it for $3.15 -- it's now $2.99. No idea if it'll stay that way; I suspect they'll crawl back up over the next week or two.

3. Seems to have worked?
I don't know if you remember one week ago, but in my city (Macon) gas was at about $2.55. Now it ranges from $2.89 to $2.99. Sure, that's down a few cents from when the HYSTERIA hit...but it's still more than a $.30 rise in the past week.

Waiving the gasoline taxes is NOT working...there's no mechanism to ensure that the savings get passed on to the consumer.

4. Well here in NE Atlanta the prices
are $0.16 lower than they were Friday, when Perdue waived the tax. So for today it is working here -- I don't expect it to work for very long. As soon as the focus shifts, prices will go back up (or fail to go down if supply increases).

It's basically a PR move -- Perdue & the stations that go along will look good for now, but it won't last.

5. Are the stations required to pass on the savings?
If not, then it is pure profit for them.

6. With Taft as Governor Ohio will
probably raise the tax so we don't buy as much.

7. That delights these bastards. Then, next they can cry that they
have to close schools or cut back welfare programs, etc. because there isn't the money. Don't you know by now that "disasters" are the gift that just keep on giving to the right wing. Wait until reality ends up on their doorstep.
