we have lots of evacuees at the TCC in Tucson. Would it be bad to bring

them beer? from what I hear they have all the essential food and water so my friend and I are thinking they may be lacking in the more pleasureful forms of what they may have enjoyed on hot days....I dunno it's more my friends idea I'm thinking I wanna hit costco and get bulk hershey bars for little kids or even adults...

Like I said it was my buddy's idea (he's a combat vet from the first gulf war so ya know figure it out hehe) I personally want to bring them candy maybe ciggs I know this all sounds unhealthy but I am assuming they have healthy food already, if they don't I'll make another trip.

I doubt any organization will let you bring beer into a shelter.

Yea I figured that. I dunno I thought it wasn't too terrible of an idea but personally I'd rather bring snack stuff like candy bars for any children there or something like that I dunno what the situation is there yet like what they have though but I imagine they have basic food there but probably nothing that would tantalize someone who hasn't tasted something sweet for days.

Me personally, I would need some alcohol to deal with it all.

Yeah, the food is going to be basic. It'll be institutional mass-produced food--nutritional, but a lot like school food. They probably get sandwiches and chips, etc for lunch and hot meals for breakfast and dinner. There's probably jello or cake, but nothing extravagant.

Maybe you should check with whoever's running the operation at TCC first. Maybe just bring them all a bunch of Eegees. :)

As far as I know, they're only in Arizona. Sometimes I get a major Eegees jones up here in the Bay Area. :)

the hershey bars and such will be great for the kids, but I'm sure there's a sizeable number who'd appreciate a few good smokes, as well.

(I don't smoke, but as an ex-smoker I can assure you: there's nothing a smoker likes more than a fresh pack.)

I read on another post that one of the big shelters gives out 3 cigarettes a day and they have to bum a light if they don't have one themselves. A carton of menthols and non-menthols would probably be most welcome.

but you definitely have the best of intentions. I think that it might be a bad idea given the trauma these people have gone through. There is the possibility that there might be people who are recovering alcoholics who, because of the severe trauma, do not have the willpower to resist (I know I wouldn't be able to - I would be off the wagon in two seconds), etc. I would at least check with the people in charge of the shelter.

Though I may be wrong; I'd check first.

However many can cram into your car or meet you wherever for a brewski to UNWIND.

:) I dunno not to steretype but I always imagined New Orleans people being of the totally cool and kind but rough types much zonians who might even look at regular beer as "diluted pee water!"

They could use some candy, because they are sorta calorie deprived.

What else they need:

socks
underwear
shoes of all sizes
t-shirts
pants
school supplies so the kids can go to school

Consider donating bandannas (can be draped over face to block out overhead shelter lights) and ear plugs so they can get some goddamn sleep

Most shelters will have cooks and kitchen facilities, but will need food donated
