How to help the people of the Gulf coast? Abolish the Estate Tax! WooHoo!
Yes! The cries from the Right have begun! How to help the poor victims of Hurricane Katrina? Abolish the evil Death Tax!

The American Family Business Institute has taken the initiative. And with a name like that, is it any wonder where they're coming from? In case you haven't heard, the usage rights to the words "family" and "business" are owned by the Republican Party (The rights to "American" are currently the subject of litigation between Liberal and Conservative groups).

Excerpt:

"The death tax is a proven drag on the American economy," Patten (of the American Family Business Institute) continued, "and the Gulf Coast region cannot afford it while it begins to rebuild. Taking half of what families have earned at a time like this would be morally indefensible and economically foolish. We are hopeful that Representatives of the Gulf Coast region and from across the nation will embrace this call and do the right thing for families and family-businesses in the affected region.

Of course, the article forgets to mention that the Estate Tax is only levied against estates valued at $1.5 million and above. Just look at these poor 1.5-millionaires who will be unjustly crushed under the boot of the death tax:

Just think! This poor momma won't be able to leave her Exxon stock to her little baby without paying the Federal Government (and FEMA! Bah!) its share!

1. Why are Republicans so evil?
Why do they have to look to take advantage of even the worst of catastrophes? Greedy, corrupt to the soul. They NEVER stop deceitfully twisting anything if it's to their advantage. Beyond pathetic. Peace.

2. "a proven drag"
Ah yes, what a horrible drag it was on our economy during the roaring 50s and 60s. Much like the 70-90% top federal tax bracket really put a damper on that era.

3. E-mailed McCain
to that effect, that probably a statistical 0% of the dead and dying in New Orleans would be affected by the tax. Had to point out though that probably 100% of those voting in the Senate would be affected.

4. Does anyone think it's possible ...
... for the Right to respond to (or create ala Iraq) a catastrophe without figuring out how to further enrich the people who don't need help and never have?

9/11? Tax-cuts for corporations!

Iraq? No-bid government contracts!

A future shortfall in Social Security? Get rid of it!

Recession? More tax-cuts for the rich!

Crushing gas prices? An energy bill that ensures continuing dependence on oil!

5. They are spreading it a bit thin aren't they?
Estate tax AND blaming everyone but W for the Katrina response debacle at the same time? Well, they really don't have much choice about the Katrina thing now do they?
