40,000 bodies expected.
http://www.t-g.com/story/1116806.html

"A co-owner of Shelbyville-based Gowen-Smith Chapel has been deployed to Gulfport, Miss., to help with recovery since Hurricane Katrina, and his business partner here has described the grim task there.
"DMort is telling us to expect up to 40,000 bodies," Dan Buckner said, quoting officials with the Disaster Mortuary Operational Response Team, a volunteer arm of Homeland Security.

The 40,000 estimate does "not include the number of disinterred remains that have been displaced from ... mausoleums," Buckner told the Times-Gazette Monday.

Since New Orleans is below sea level, in-ground burial is impossible.

Public health protection and identification of bodies are tasks for DMort, Buckner said. Teams include morticians, medical examiners, coroners, pathologists, anthropologists, odontologists, dental assistants, photographers, police, DNA, X-ray, evidence, fingerprint, mental health and computer specialists, and others such as heavy equipment operators.

"Until they search each and every remaining house and remove all the fallen materials ... they will not know how many people are there," Buckner said."

That is a LOT of dead folks. As that number gets out, America will trully be shocked.

1. I believe that is conservative.
This is a murder on a huge scale. Our own homegrown dictator killed these people.

2. It may be conservative.
I seem remember, but I can't remember where, of reading predisaster estimates of 100K. But those were long before this year, so I can't be sure of that number.

In a way, such huge numbers may actually help W as he could spin it as evidence that the disaster was simply too huge for anybody to handle.

6. 11 09 01 does not belong to all of us yet.
It will be released in France, Belgium and Switzerland on September 11
and has been sold to Italy, Spain, Germany and most of the countries
from which its makers come. It has still, however, to find a distributor
in either Britain or the United States, and may well fail to do so.
Which would be a shame for many reasons, only one of which is that all
profits from the film are to be donated to Handicap International

4. I don't think he'll be able to spin
We expect such large numbers in third world countries, not ours. We (collective) consider ourselves superior to every single country on this planet.

These numbers will prove otherwise.

Bush's inept management will be center stage.

5. The article suggests that's 40,000 in Mississippi alone.
As you say, that is a LOT of dead folks.

7. I think that's misphrasing by the writer.
At least, I hope it is. The article was a bit confusing about whether he was just on the MS Gulf Coast, or included LA also. I am inclined to think LA because of the reference to N.O. not being able to bury below ground.

I hope that is an overall total.

10. Wanna bet this emerges as THE arguement on the necessity of
universal I.D. "tagging" of citizens?

Sooner or later, they'll point to it and make the law.
