Halliburton Subsidiary Gets Katrina Deal

By LOLITA C. BALDOR, Associated Press WriterSun Sep 4, 4:58 PM ET

A Halliburton Co. subsidiary that has come under fire for its reconstruction work in Iraq has begun tapping a $500 million Navy contract to do emergency repairs at Gulf Coast naval and Marine facilities that were battered by Hurricane Katrina.

The subsidiary, Kellogg, Brown & Root Services Inc. of Arlington, Va., was awarded the competitive bid contract last July to provide debris removal and other emergency work associated with natural disasters.

Jan Davis, a spokeswoman for the Naval Facilities Engineering Command, said Sunday that KBR will receive $12 million for work at Naval Air Station Pascagoula, Naval Station Gulfport and Stennis Space Center in Mississippi. It will receive $4.6 million for work at two smaller Navy facilities in New Orleans and others in the South.

1. Not if corporate profits about $250,000 per quarter were taxed at 90%

2. Yes, and Cheney is on his way.
It's "The Rise of Disaster Capitalism" practiced around the world. Why not try it at home?

4. You're shocked?
Halliburton had contracts before the hurricane victims had water.

5. I am not surprised that Chimpy did this, but I am disgusted.
It is deeply disturbing that Halliburton was awarded the contract for cleaning up after Hurricane Katrina. I cannot express in words how disgusted I am by this decision. It reminds me of, I hate to say this, but Hitler's regime, and how only those people allied with Hitler got the jobs, only this is Bush and his regime. It's repulsive and wrong.

7. Well...
They've had good practice building bases in Iraq. Seems they'd be a natch to repair bases in the Gulf.

:grr:

10. What makes me sick is that Halliburton received this contract before>>

anything was done by the president for the americans in the gulf. I keep hearing that the # 1 thing we need to be doing right now is getting those people to safety but yet Bush has time to make sure his cronies are taken care of. This contract was given to Halliburton the day after the strom, yet it took what 5 days for the President to go to the affected area. Disgraceful

12. Tell Congress: Just say NO to Halliburton!
Congress will be working on more budget packages for the Katrina-affected Gulf coasts in the weeks to come. Flood their offices with calls and emails: Just say NO to Halliburton!!!
