Lydia's getting all tinfoily again...
Many weekday mornings, I watch the Japanese-language news on AZN-TV.

It consists of a tabloidy newscast from Japan interspersed with film footage from U.S. networks with commentary in Japanese, presumably to allow expatriate Japanese people who don't understand English well to keep up with events in the country they're temporarily living in.

Okay, I stopped watching TV coverage as of yesterday (I couldn't take it anymore, and I had a lot of labor to do on Labor Day), so I don't know where this footage came from, but it was of the Bushboy visiting a shelter for hurricane evacuees somewhere. All I know is that it was from either one of the Big Three networks or from CNN.

Anyway, as I was watching the footage, something struck me as off. After a few seconds, I realized what it was: none of the people in the shelter were paying the least bit of attention to Bush.

Normally, when anyone famous steps into an area where lots of ordinary people are, he or she is mobbed. But no one was crowded around, and yet there were no security barriers in evidence. People were just walking back and forth in the background.

I thought that perhaps they were so angry that they had no interest in mobbing him, but that seemed unlikely. If that were the case, you'd think that at least one person in that huge crowd would try to get in Bush's face, Secret Service or no Secret Service.

That's when the tinfoil thoughts struck.

Perhaps Bush was never in that shelter at all. Perhaps he was bluescreened into some file footage of the shelter.

Does that seem possible, or have the events of the past week addled my brain?:

1. Interestingly folks report that the survivors went NUTS when
Oprah arrived. So happy to see her.

3. So it's not as if they were "too traumatized" to notice a famous
person walking into their shelter.

2. I think I know the footage you're talking about.
He wasn't in a shelter, he was in the "command center" in Baton Rouge.

5. It looked like a shelter, but it may have been a command center
I didn't see the original, just the clip shown with Japanese commentary.

Before the clip where he was being ignored by the crowd, he was shown "comforting" two more young African-American girls.

9. No, I saw the South Africans in Biloxi and noted their accents at
the time. These were two *different* well-dressed young black girls.

7. And even if the Bushboy was visiting a command center,
as Lindsey suggested above, wouldn't the people there have reacted to him?

10. Considering that these are the people who have taken
the philosophy of the ends justifies the means to new depths, I don't put anything past them that will make them look better. I thought it was rather funny too, when they did the photo op with the two girls that people weren't paying much attention either and than he seemed to be more unprotected by SS than ordinarily.

12. German TV was saying that his photo ops took place in areas of
Biloxi that had been completely evacuated.

11. You know something? I have been noticing that too! I saw that footage
Edited on Tue Sep-06-05 04:03 PM by OmmmSweetOmmm
on tv yesterday, and it seemed weird to me that no one was acting as if he was there. I also noticed that on his first on the ground visit. People were waiting on a line, and couldn't care less that he was there.

Wag the dog?????
