If a person not in the disaster area is distraught re Katrina and the
tragedies who can they call? Do any of y'all in the mental health professions have some advice?

1. Call a counselor.
Psychologist or minister, even.

My sister has a therapy practice and has offered free counseling to anyone in her area affected, whether from NOLA or local, as her contribution to the cause. From what I know about mental health professionals, they're expecting lots of calls.

2. Thanks, I got rattled by another DUer. Sounds distraught.
The churches, of course. UU, United Churches of Christ, those guys.

I think a lot of us are a bit shaken up.

5. It's a poster over in GDP. Me, I'm really angry, but quietly so.
And, I don't forget. He has two threads on this, I'm a bit worried.

But, thanks.

6. You are kind MissMarple.
Is there still a problem?
I changed my post after I found out it wasn't you. I am glad you are doing alright. It's impossible to do any more than that at this point I'm afraid. I'm getting more vocal about my anger, a little scary for me, I've usually been so calm in emergencies. Hate to lose my temper.

4. also think about Peer Counseling
Shared grief -- and talking about the images and emotions will help. Some people are natural at listening and knowing how to give emotional support to traumatized friends.

If the anxiety is extreme -- then find a counselor or mental health professional.

I'm expecting that many people in the US will be suffering from various forms of Post Traumatic Stress etc etc --

Here at DU the posting is so heavy that we are on level three -- this is one way to handle this traumatic event.

Also be aware of people who might hold in their feelings -- and get them to talk the images they are seeing and the FEAR and CONCERN that they might have.

Apparently people are expendable to the bushies -- and can be thrown away just like used garbage -- this is perhaps just one of the realities of Katrina.

7. Get counseling, but also call
your congress critters and give them a tongue-lashing over this.
