I wonder how many of the MSM have ever been evacuated
I grew up in NY - never saw the Atlantic ocean until I was 18 but fell in love with it and made a goal to live by the ocean one day. I accomplished this last year when I moved to the east coast of FL. Before moving here I went to the outer banks of NC every year for vacation in September because of off season pricing - and prime hurricane season - fortunately I only had to evacuate twice from the outer banks - however I moved to FL four days before Hurricane Frances and had to evacuate. What these people who are criticizing the local officials don't seem to understand that even if you have the funds to evacuate - it is incredibly hard to do so. It took us almost 12 hours to get to GA last year a trip that should have been 4 hours.

When you are told to evacuate - you have two choices - evacuate out of town to either friends or a hotel - or you can go to a shelter. When you go to a shelter - which I have never done - you are told to bring sleeping bags, food and water for two to three days - medicines and important papers. I am not familiar with local officials providing transportation for evacuations - but perhaps if someone called that service is available.

My point to all this is that it seems to me that the local officials in NOLA did what is "normal" in these situations and even did apparently provide some transportation to the stadium. I personally believe that since Gov. Blanco filed for emergency status 2 and a half days before the storm hit it would have been nice for FEMA to help with transportation to shelters further away and perhaps food and water at these shelters.

But the real problem was the delayed response after the storm hit - and that is what is inexcusable. When FEMA knew this was a cat 5 they should have had equipment and personnel staged somewhere safe but close in order to deploy the minute the storm blew through. I do not understand how anyone can criticize the local officials - it seems to me that they did all they could with the resources they had. I am so sick of this administration passing the buck - I could puke. I had two folks at work today singing the blame the local officials and I called them on it and that is what we all need to do. Also - curious to know if any of these freaks blaming the locals have ever evacuated and have a freaking clue as to how hard it is. Since I live in FL I guess I would say that under the circumstance baby brother Jeb would have acted the exact same way Blanco did - only difference is that since he is the freak in chief's brother - he would have had the FEMA resources immediately.

Ok that is my rant - between being disappointed in co-workers and hearing the freak in chief state he was going to head and investigation on himself - I have come very close to having my head explode today.
