Despair Not. Demand Accountability. Letters, Links, Lovenotes& Lie-Bashing

“My personal trials have also taught me the value of unmerited suffering. As my sufferings mounted I soon realized that there were two ways that I could respond to my situation: either to react with bitterness or seek to transform the suffering into a creative force. I decided to follow the latter course. Recognizing the necessity for suffering I have tried to make of it virtue. If only to save myself from bitterness, I have attempted to see my personal ordeals as an opportunity to transform myself and heal the people involved in the tragic situation, which now obtains. I have lived these last few years with the conviction that unearned suffering is redemptive.”

-Martin Luther King, Jr.
“Suffering and Faith” (excerpt), "Christian Century Magazine", April 27, 1960

PLEASE POST your letters to elected officials and the press, Katrina Response action alerts and info links, plus affirmations and ideas to channel our outrage. This is the no-whine zone. We are going to broadcast the WAKE UP CALL.

:rant:

The unspeakable permanent nightmare of the citizens-- and the city-- of New Orleans, resulted from the malign neglect of the cynically-named Department of Homeland Security. They will not have suffered in vain. We honor their human dignity as we bear witness. This is America’s Wake Up Call. Any American with a heart to feel and eyes to see will be touched and changed and aware.

The waters of propaganda have been drained from the White House fishbowl, revealing the priorities and the intentions of this administration. This nation has no Commander in Chief. The U.S.A. has been commandeered by a corporate CEO whose bottom line has nothing to do with the American homeland or its security. The U.S.A. has become a private cash cow for corporate robber barons. The myth that “Big Government is the problem” and the decades-long “disassemblement” of the social safety net has reached its logical-- and foreseeable-- conclusion.

Too many brave souls in Louisiana and Mississippi have paid an unimaginable price that provides this moment of revelation. It is our duty to channel our outrage as we witness the suffering; to be motivated and DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY from our elected officials.

George Bush stated before he left for New Orleans (five days after the storm and end-of-vacation fund-raising, golfing and Nero-esque guitar playing) that many people were working hard to help the victims and “the results are unacceptable.”

He's right. This is UNACCEPTABLE. We don’t want excuses, we want accountability.

No amount of catapulting, spinning or doublethinking will return the blinders to America’s eyes.

We are one people. We have witnessed the ultimate outcome of governing by “whatever the market will bear.” We want our country back.

Now.

2. AP Network News has called accountability "finger-pointing, blame game"
all day long on their news segments on Sirius satellite radio. This is beyond shilling for the Republican talking points. They are disgusting.

OP by Drewskie

"Impeach, Remove, Jail"

<snip>

"As we know, this agony and desperation was caused in large part by a near complete absence of adequate federal government funding, preparedness, and leadership. We the people will continue to help Americans and non-Americans alike, with or without the participation or approval of George W. Bush and his Neo-Conservative cohorts. While it is true that what is most important right now is to rescue, feed, house, and in any way possible care for those immediately affected by the disaster, it is equally true that in the long run those directly responsible for aggravating the tragic situation must be held accountable. The mounting evidence of the Bush administration's criminal mismanagement of the nation, as well as its consistently arrogant disregard for our planet's people and natural environments must be confronted immediately."

- Viggo Mortensen.

one of those days last week;
The facts need to be faced in this country. It is with great distress that some of us watch our fellow countrymen die in New Orleans. It is with more distress that we see how this disaster came to pass. The Bush Administration is a menace to American society. Pouring all our country' resources into policy's that line their 'base's' pockets, and allow to die the people of New Orleans. And they claim some kind of moral authority? Following this disaster the articles have come to light from 2001 high-lighting the systematic destruction of FEMA, both monetarily and intellectually. Our government chose to divert funds to shoring up the levee in New Orleans to more important issues...like terrorism, and the occupation of a foreign country. And, to make matters worse, Mr. Bush appointed inexperienced and unqualified political allies to head those agencies meant to protect all of us, not just 'the base'. The war in Iraq is far worse I'm sure, than what I'm witnessing in my own country, but both disasters are consequences of the actions taken by our government. Watching this unfold in slow motion day after day, helps me realize how very badly we must be treating the Iraqi's. To witness such blatant disregard for the life of our own fellow citizens chills me to the bone, as to the naked truth about the issues of Abu Ghraib and Guantanamo. Something must be done to bring responsible governing back to the federal government. Since the coup of 2000 the massive looting of our federal government makes any references to looting in New Orleans laughable. The Patriot Act, The Bankruptcy Bill, The Energy Bill, The EPA, Slashing Veterans Benefits, Homeland Security, Haliburton, Media Consolidation, Unverifiable Voting Technology, massive fraud.... all lead us to where we are today. Someone humane needs to take the reins away from the negligent, self-serving, arrogant, mentally deficient people who are ruining our county.

Y2Katrina: Open Letter to our Representatives in Congress

<snip>

"The American people are outraged and we resent the implication that we consider the mistreatment of these citizens unremarkable-- acceptable because they were already disenfranchised and on the lowest rungs of the social ladder.
The American people recognize the humanity of these survivors-- we recognize ourselves in their faces. We see our children in their babies held up to the open sky, their dying elders, dehydrating and unfed for days. The American people DO NOT UNDERSTAND.

"We recognize the vulnerability of our communities to the lack of preparedness, lack of awareness (that certain citizens even exist or matter) and lack of accountability of government agencies charged, empowered and funded to protect us.
We demand accountability from our government and representation by our national representatives in the Congress of the United States.

"The American People understand that what was perpetrated on the disenfranchised citizens of New Orleans is truly “unacceptable.” Now that the President is back from vacation, he is available to provide answers and solutions to this deadly debacle, or explain to Congress and The American people why the U.S. government's malign neglect was justified."

19. Bush is Unacceptable
I have been watching the steady decline of America for a long time. Should we really be surprised that this has happened? It's the logical outcome of the neocon agenda. These neocon f-ers have made me depressed for a good 15 years, wondering if I will ever make it in this horribly unfair economy. Time for them to pay. I'm sick of living this way, & I'm sick of seeing more & more people destroyed by these uncaring jerks. Do I want revenge? Damn right I do!

21. We are going to Washington Sept 24th
I posted a letter to the media here a couple times. One response I got was "why bother to threaten them, you actually think it's going to do something?" My response was no, not unless there are alot more like me. Writing letters, e-mails, calling your representatives is all well and good and I do all of those things. But we have a chance to show that we are not just a few pissed off citizens. We need to show them our numbers, please, if there is any way you can make it be in D.C. on Sept 24th. www.unitedforpeace.org has boards for ride shares, peace trains and buses, and the like...

22. Yes and as DU worked thru a series of emotions this week
(GD seems to have gone over to Frivolity now-- kinda weird IMHO) I had hoped to see a channeling of the outrage, by us availing ourselves of the opportunities:

--to use DU to organize our efforts and flex collective muscle

--to call for accountability and independent investigation of Bushco.'s malign neglect that resulted in death and destruction in NO.

--to reinvigorate the existing actions to impeach Bushco.

--to express solidarity with the disenfranchised and the African American community (locally, nationally and on DU)

--to make sure this WAKE UP CALL is heard AND LOUD

--to GUARANTEE that Americans are aware that this treatment of fellow citizens is unspeakably, horrifically WRONG AND CANNOT BE JUSTIFIED BY ANY STRETCH OF THE IMAGINATION OR THE RONG WING BIG LIE MACHINE.

This was criminal negligence or worse.
This was genocide.
This must not stand.
This is a test of our response to these events.
