I read the story of Ruby Bridges every year to students, no matter what grade I'm teaching.

One year, I worked in a private school. I read this story and the kids (in all grades K-8) were like "Why didn't she go to the school where she belonged? Why did she want to change schools?" I explained it to them, but most of the kids acted like they had no idea why schools should be integrated.

I was so hard on those kids all year long. They had wealthy parents, but as I always told them- your parents have money. You have earned NOTHING. Therefore, you're nothing but a charity case. Keep that in mind.

Imagine what impact that had in 1964. Some reproductions remove the word even today.
