Hypothesis: New Orleans to be the next Las Vegas
I had a conversation with a business acquaintance today. He said that he had heard speculation that the plan might be to rebuild New Orleans like a southern Vegas.

'Course, you'd have to get all those poor people out of there first.

5. The people whose family goes back several generations in NO,
the people who know NO as their ONLY LIFE, the place where they grew up, the people WHO LOVE NO, heart, mind and soul for whatever reasons. These people are going to be ticked off if everything is dozed down and casinos and waterslides are put in its place.

6. It would explain all that delay. The more damage, the better?

9. I don't think it has anything to do with the delay.
But it's what I think's gonna happen.

15. You said it.
I like Vegas, but Vegas was created to be Vegas.

Turning New Orleans rich culture into a Cajun-flavored Disney World would be so sad.

7. I can see it
out of the 15000 or so evacuees that came to San Antonio, about half have already been taken from the shelter and assimilated into our city; given jobs, apartments, etc. Local TV News tells us they want to stay.

So, I imagine if the below-poverty level folks of New Orleans can get established somewhere else, the plan will work.

10. Unfortunately, the below poverty level residents of New Orleans might not
have the means to return to their former homes in the future. These poor people's lives are so shattered.

13. I can't see the mayor in on this. He looked like he really cared about
the people - all of them. And how is this going to play in Mississippi? They had $500 mill a day coming in. They are planning on rebuilding the casinos. If NO is the next Vegas, Miss will have no income.

18. I'm torn here
One part says that NO is now and will be a toxic waste site for a long time to come, I don't like the idea of the poor being exposed to what may eventually come back to bite them in the ass, health wise.

On the other hand if a bunch of rich piggie reptiles want to build a playground built on toxic sludge, hey go for it.

20. That will sure ruin New Orleans.
Those speculators and corporations better release the NO citizens from their out of state locations, give them Louisianna housing and pay them decent wages to rebuild their city when the reconstruction begins. But I hear that Haliburton never hires the locals - one of their big mistakes in Iraq.
