We, the people, have NEVER owned the media. As A.J. Liebling says, "Freedom of the press belongs to those who own one." You DON'T, so you should stop hoping that they serve your interests. They don't. They serve the interests of the owners, the shareholders, as well as the emperors of the business world instead. They know that sensationalism and trivial matters make more money than dry, stale issues like health care, public education, the environment, or something even like funding for levee projects.
In answer to your question, I would say they would attack Bush if it remains "economically feasible" and not longer than that. The second something new pops up like another runaway bride or another white girl goes missing in some holiday paradise that's sure to get the ratings up and the advertising revenue in, this will become old news.
Making money is the name of the game. To those who have sold their souls in the name of more money and power, it doesn't matter if they're doing business with Adolf Hitler or making bombs for the US war machine to stomp out 3rd world nations. What matters to them is that they go home at the end of the day wealthier than before. This is Corporatism in its most brutal, competitive form...totally unchecked by any moral compass. The lowest common denominator wins, and greed is the lowest denominator.
