19. Here is an article .....
Edited on Thu Sep-08-05 09:20 AM by Pepper32
Charities responded at times even more rapidly than the government, distributing an unprecedented $2.7 billion, and caught some people who would have fallen through the cracks, such as undocumented workers or those without insurance. They also increased attention and services for mental health issues, an area that has been underserved in past disasters.

There were, at times, duplication of efforts and benefits among charities, a problem that was recognized and addressed through the creation of the United Services Group.

But a lack of coordination led to disparities in compensation. Civilians killed or seriously injured received a total of $8.7 billion, averaging about $3.1 million per recipient, coming mostly from the Victims' Compensation Fund.

http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/nation/la-110804compensation_lat,0,44112.story?coll=la-home-headlines

On edit:

Here is another....

FLEMMING and another defendant, LONNIE RANSOM, then drove vanloads of the "workers" to relief sites around the city and the "workers" applied for benefits. RANSOM would stay with the "workers" to ensure that they did not walk off with the relief checks, which ranged from $3,000 from Safe Horizon to a maximum of $6,645 from the Red Cross. The checks were then turned over to FLEMMING who cashed them at his bank. In return for the checks, FLEMMING kicked back a small portion of the checks, ranging from $100 to $1,100 to the homeless men and women. FLEMMING has been charged with stealing a total of $108,905.28 from the charities in this fashion.http://www.manhattanda.org/whatsnew/press/2002-04-09.htm

So, apparently they recieved more than $2,000. What a surprise!

50. It doesn't even begin to compare
At least the survivors had homes to go home to.
I know you were being facetious, but that is irritating the hell out of me why people don't understand that this was so much worse than 911, in casualties, in property damage, etc.
But I will admit, I felt unsafe after 911.
But I feel unsafe AND unprotected NOW.

I would have all the TVs I could carry and get out of the waste deep water surrounding my old place (getting them all onto the rescue boats would have taken lots of talking huh?) and onto the transport bus/plane and then I could sell it off in Houston (where no one else would have such a supply). Plus I would have the "diaper windfall" not to mention the fabulous wealth from all the shoes.....hold it that gives me an idea....CONDI CAN BUY THEM!!! She will apparently buy anything.

32. They are actually scaling back from the magnificient $2K amount?
They must have focus grouped/polled on that and found that $2,000 was the golden goose to their base.

I have to admit the first I heard of this it was $1,500. When everyone started saying $2,000 I should have known something was up.

From what I hear on Fox News, NOLA was filled with loser welfare cases. With 2 grand you can probably not only buy replacement loved ones, but they'll be upgraded loved ones too!
:sarcasm:

However, you should be aware that the IRS will be looking for it's slice of that $2,000 come April, 2006. Just FYI.

38. And Who Really Makes The Money?
A good portion of it will go back into taxes. I wouldn't be surprised if these cards are considered as income and these folks will be held liable to report it as a gift and have to pay on it next April.

And remember this is $2,000 PER FAMILY, not individual. Someone with a family of 5 gets the same as someone with no children.
