Point and laugh time: Freepers pissing themselves over Flight 93 Monument
The monument sounds nice, with 40 windchimes for each of the 40 people lost on the flight. Here's an artist's rendering:

And here's where the whining begins:

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1480220/posts

They unveiled the new Flight 93 memorial today and to my shock it's a large crescent. When you fly over the area where Muslim Extremists killed innocent people in the name of Islam on the day america was attacked you will see a symbol of their religion.

This makes me sick.

Absolutely outrageous!

I'm sorry I doubted you. I had to go visit the site myself. I could not believe that they would choose to slap those dead heroes in the face this way.

Here it is...unbelievable. Who thought of this as the memorial for Flight 93? A crescent? Can't they see how much like an Islamic crescent this looks?

OMG. Unbelievable.

How could they do such an insensitive thing in a country where Christian symbols displayed in public are banned. I weep.
15 posted on 09/08/2005 8:41:39 AM PDT by NetValue

I see it's official name is supposedly "Crescent of Embrace." I think whoever chose that name should change it, because it's at the least insensitive to victims' families and more likely a PC attempt to "reach out."
17 posted on 09/08/2005 8:49:19 AM PDT by Coop

And the flight 93 families are accepting this OUTRAGE ..??

I'm stunned! I'd bulldoze the place rather than have any symbol of the enemy built over my loved one's grave - this is just disgusting to the max.

Who is the idiot who designed this outrage, and who's the BIGGER IDIOT FOR ALLOWING SUCH A PERSON TO BE CHOSEN - a person obviously toooooo PC and not patriotic.

I'll bet all of Islam is laughing and celebrating at our ignorance of their symbol.

4. well, come on. it DOES look like a red crescent
and that does remind me of Islam...so based on what the memorial is supposed to be conveying, I actually agree with them it was a dumb idea for design. Definitely will not make it off the drawing board in its current form.

15. Islam is not a violent religion
Not any moreso than Christianity anyway. Why should an entire religion be painted by the actions of a few?

Why not the "Swastika of Embrace" Holocaust Memorial.

Looks like a ripoff of the Vietnam Memorial with its low profile. How unoriginal!

What is the significance of the crescent in the design?
I can't wait to hear the designers try to talk their way out of this!

That is a horrible disgrace and an outright insult to every single person who died on Flight 93, to every person who died on September 11th, and to every person who has died fighting terrorism since... not to mention to our entire nation.

19. must we build a memorial for everything?
I mean really. the desperate need of the US to memorialize everything, to buy ourselves history is really disturbing. The Trade Center is one thing, 3000 people died there. But flight 93? come on, there have been over 50 plane crashes in the US that killed 40+ people, do we build monuments to them all?

will the US eventually look like a cemetary, with a sacred monument everywhere you look?

24. Well!! True, but....
...Shanksville is a fairly depressed area the traffic the site brings through the town is helping them economically. Besides I think there was a makeshift memorial near the site since 2001 that was sort of impromptu by people dropping off flowers and stuffed animals sitting there anyway. The permanent one is just replacing that one.

26. so a memorial is economic development?
that's a sick motivation, if someone is using it, no?

(although what the heck is the Taj Mahal then...?)

the impromptu memorial is the powerful one, not the commercial one replacing it. Think of it this way, which stirs more emotion in you, a simple photograph of the 'missing' posters in New York after 9/11, or a picture of the proposed 'Ground Zero' memorial?

whats the point? As far as the design is concerned I didn't realize the crescent was the "symbol" for Islam so it didn't bother me.
