There are some churches and schools doing some great things.
Heard an interview on News and Notes on NPR; apparently a church of mostly white rich people (the interviewer asked him these point blank and the interviewee was frank about it) cleared out their sunday school area and took families in. He was then asked if they were welcomed into a church and the man said the evacuees were invited into the church services and were "a blessing." They were working on activities "besides regular meals" since their church schedule had been thrown into chaos.

They also did some great interviews with administrators of small primarily black colleges who were doing all they could to accommodate displaced students with classes, financial and psychological counseling.

1. Yes, There Are
And some companies, too. Although some people disagree, I still think it is great that Marriott sent its own bus in to evacuate employees and guests. And Wal-Mart sent supplies too.

So, I think it is outstanding that some churches are living the best parts of Jesus' message.

I just hope the RWers don't try to use this as an excuse to cut government funding for these things because "Oh, look, faith based and private enterprise is taking care of it." Helping the people of Hurricane Katrina is such an enormous task, that it requires the best of government, private enterprise, religious groups and other NGOs working together. And of course, private citizens.

2. Samuel L. Jackson had the best suggestion.
Buy someone lunch. That's within the range of single people in unaffected areas.
