Authorities said Friday that their first systematic sweep of the city found far fewer bodies than expected, suggesting that Hurricane Katrina's death toll may not be the catastrophic 10,000 feared.

"I think there's some encouragement in what we've found in the initial sweeps that some of the catastrophic deaths that some people predicted may not have occurred," said Terry Ebbert, New Orleans' homeland security chief.

Ebbert declined to give a new estimate of the dead.

Another post said that bodies are everywhere, and no one has yet gotten in to rescue people and assess the situation.

i fear some of the dead will never be found and families will be left never knowing...

NO DOUBT! We'll never know how many died because they are gone, gone for good. Once they drain NO it will be the most gruesome discovery ever seen in our country and you can be money on that one! In the meantime, the creatures that live in the bayou are having a hey day!

announced they would now begin the search for bodies. How can they now be saying that they know with any certainty that the toll may not be as 'catastrophic' as feared. Tell that to one family member who lost a loved one unecessarily in this calamity.

It's just too early to say yet, I hope it's true. Fact is that unless there is independent corroboration for the amount of bodies found, they can cover up the actual numbers and they will probably attempt to do just that.

The following statement is included in the AP article on www.nola.com: "Numbers so far are relatively minor as compared to the dire projections of 10,000," Ebbert said.

So far! They've just started looking for bodies. As I stated in the other thread on this topic, I'll be very interested to hear what Mayor Nagin has to say about Ebbert's statement!

That the only ones that will be counted are the ones who have family members who insist on it.
The homeless and the people who fall through the cracks of society will in essence, cease to exist, without any mention being made of how they died.

Amazing timing, right after they annonuce that reporters are being kicked or asked not to photograph the dead? -- why not, they can easily blur faces out where there was anything left to visualize!

Survivors are scattered to the four winds going to whoever will take them in, families are busted apart, there are bullitin boards crammed full of messages looking for people.

And in all this confusion, GREAT NEWS INSTEAD OF 25,000 DEAD WE ONLY HAVE 9999. I don't believe them, I don't trust them, I'll never trust anything any government tells me again.
