hit and Bush has bussed them all over the country, how will they ever get back to home? You know Bush won't supply the bus fare home. This has to be the biggest, most obvious relocation of people since WWII's japanese internment.

They're talking about having the gulf reopened for business very soon. Odd. Who's left down there to run it?

The death of those poor old people in that Nursing home is a crime. The administrators abandoned them and should be tried for murder.

to where?

where do they stay when they get there?

how do you feed them once they get there?

If they can't go back, where do they stay?

The emergency plan funded by FEMA and completed by a private consulting firm said nothing about any of this...

Privatizing
Outsourcing was useless.

Its not like many communities are going to want these poor people. They will be accepted for about three weeks. Then they will be frowned upon, seen as a burden (even if they find jobs and pay taxes).

Battle Creek and the state of Michigan have welcomed a few hundred evacuees, and we even have free housing for them for up to a year. Everyone here I've talked to believes that we're in it for the long haul and that this might be the thing to get several local programs the kick-start they've needed.

I know we're far away for them, and winter will be a shock, but you wouldn't believe the outpouring of support for the evacuees up here. Our governor is working overtime to get them free housing and is trying to find jobs for them in several areas around the state. Many are saying that we need that to spill over to everyone, not just evacuees, and many eyes are being opened.

and then you will hear right wingers start to complain.

Our crime leves have really increased since we took in "those people"

Our city has gone to hell since "those people" arrived.

You know, the usual stuff.

Maybe I'm incredibly naive, but people here are just steaming about what happened, even the serious Republicans (who are so mad they can't even talk about it). I've also been hearing others wonder why we haven't had this kind of outpouring of support for the poor who already live here, and there's definitlely a movement to make some changes that way as well.

Maybe you're right about it waning over the next few months, but somehow I doubt it. If there's anything Michiganders and other Midwesterners pride ourselves on it's feeding and taking care of strangers. I'm not saying we're perfect by any means, but hospitality is very important (and you'd better like meatballs 'cause they're at every potluck--and there's always a potluck going on).

Its about the biggest, most efficient way to turn a profit.

Do you really think they're going to rebuild their homes? Are you that naive? Most homes don't have flood insurance. Insurance companies won't have any responsibility to rebuild their homes.

This is how I think its going to go down in a lot of cases. The local government is unlikely to have a clue to where the poor home owners went. I'm betting that the owners will lose their homes when they can't be found to pay their property taxes. A lot of land has effectively been abandoned and will be put up for auction by the city. Guess what happens next...
