Is there any candidate whose records are totally available?
I have asked this every time it has come up in regards to Dean and been stiffed everytime. So I decided to post a thread. Is there any candidate, even one, for whom the types of records that Dean has had sealed (correspondence between Dean and his staff and correspondence between Dean and his constituents) is readily available and not sealed for any period of time? In the alternative I will accept that I am wrong on what Dean has sealed if that can be proven. So this is your chance to put up.

10. I will
I'm not anti-Dean in as far as I will vote for him if nominated, I just don't like him for various reasons including hiding/sealing his records.

as for the others, I seriously don't know! If there are others, then I think they should have their records opened as well.

The ability to expose a candidates failings leads to an informed voting public and decisions made after are decisions we live with, but to hide discovery until after the vote leads to a deceived voting public and a decision that should not be acceptable.

Can you give a cite for that? It doesn't sound right, to me.

15. I shouldn't have to site what is a constitutional principle
under Seperation of Powers the executive can't enforce laws against Congress without its permission. On several laws including FOI Congress didn't.

congressmen.

The rest: Clark and Dean - very tough.

The big question is: Did Clinton and other Governor's who have run for Pres. open their records. THAT would be very telling.

12. Not really.
Congresspeople have the right to "revise" the Congressional Record. If you watch their remarks on the floor, they will always invoke that right.

What you see in the CR may or may not be what they did or said.

It is NOT a complete record, although it does show votes.

17. Clinton actually went out of his way to make everything public. It was an
obsession of his.

I think he set some kind of record for declassifying information, and he waived privilege over everthing from his administration which wasn't covered by national security privilege.

I think I read this in The Clinton Wars.

Also, dsc, if you want an answer to this question, just call each campaign and as them which records of theirs from their service as public officials, are they refusing to release to the public.

20. he also
wanted an exception from some laws to have the information released EARLIER than law says. he also changed the rule for releasing information to having to release it unless it can be proved it's a national security issue rather than having to prove it's not in order to get it released. he was against bush's extending the date to release records of presidents.

8. Ummm
I'm quite sure his correspondence with constituents, etc. is NOT available; if it IS available, I'm glad I'm not his constituent--- I wouldn't want it to be available to any nosy bastard who wanted to poke his nose into it.

7. Basically, Congressmen's records are pretty wide-open you can see
how they've voted on every bill. In addition - Kerry, Gephardt, Graham and have been under the spotlight for years. So Kerry, Gephardt, Kuchinich and Grahams record's are pretty much an open book.

This makes them basically "safe candidates" because the liklihood of a big surprise" coming out is pretty remote. In addition, people are familiar with them - so they feel "safer" with these three. IMO -this is a big plus for these three. THAT'S why I'd like to see them stick around as an "insurance" policy.

Right below is Edwards. He hasn't been around as long and he was a trial lawyer.

Both Braun and Sharpton have a few skeltons in their closets.

Ironically, the 2 riskiest are also the top two: Clark and Dean. That's why it's important for us to poke at their records. I pary to God that one of the 4 safe guys stays around for a while - because if something "blows" with these guy - we are in deep doo-doo.

11. You are referring to public records, not private.
Gov. Dean's public records are open just as are congresspersons records.

Correspondance, private records of meetings, and private conversations of congresspeople are NOT open. If you don't believe this, call your representative and ask if you can come to their office and look thru their files.

18. I think this is very misleading
The governor doesn't engage in private business. People don't send the governor letters which are private. (If they do, they mark them 'private and confidential' or they send them to the governor at home.)

These were the governor's ordinary records, as far as I know. People are trying to pretned he got thousands of letters from people privately disclosing their sexuality to the governor and he's protecting them. That's so misleading and barely logical.

22. It's a fact that Dean tried to have his gubernatorial records

sealed for twenty years, and settled on sealing them for ten years. He has said he did this because he didn't want any embarrassing revelations while he was running for president. You seem to be claiming this is only about his private correspondence but "gubernatorial records" does not imply "private correspondence."

Dean also told the Boston Globe that he checked his Selective Service records to make sure there was nothing embarrassing in them, either. That I don't understand since he knew what he said in the letter in which he requested a military physical and he knew what his orthopedist said in the letter saying he was unable to serve due to his back problem. What else did he think was in his records, aside from the X-rays he got from his orthopedist to take to the military doctor? Was he afraid the doctor{s) at his physical wrote some damaging comments in his record?

What is he afraid that people will see in his gubernatorial records?

Let us know if you find any other candidate refusing to release his records. That would concern me in other candidates as well as Dean.
