A case for fighting fire with fire - the assault of the Gore family's home
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 09:20 PM by nu_duer
THis is why we can't be civil with these thugs, the same ones who slithered out the gutters in Texas and Florida and are now getting nasty in CA.

Doesn't this just turn your stomach? Still?

http://baltimorechronicle.com/mediacensors_dec02.html

AL GORE : Well, this was the Republican response to what was happening during that 36-day period, and they organized busloads of people that came and stood outside the house all day and all night screaming at the top of their lungs.

WALTERS : What, “Get out!”?

TIPPER GORE : Things like that, yes, and, and sometimes ... things that we don’t want to say on your program, and, some people saw that they were buses from “churches,” but it was organized. The one thing that, that they did mainly was reach the bedrooms of our children, and Albert was still in school locally, and trying to study, so we rearranged, you know, they ... kids moved to a different part of the house, and I was trying to think of a way that we could kind of laugh about this since obviously it was out of our control, there wasn’t anything anybody could do so I got all the boom boxes in the house and... I remember sort of what the government did with Noriega... I thought we’d try that, and I aimed them at, toward, you know, where the crowd ...

WALTERS : The crowd?

TIPPER GORE : ... And I put nature sounds on and turned it all the way up. And at least the kids laughed.

AL GORE : There were a few, more than a few who supported us and were offended by the organized chanting round the clock who came out on the other street corner during the day to express their support with signs, and... You know, emotions were running high throughout the country and it was just an unprecedented time.

KARENNA GORE : Well, when we were in the Vice President’s house during the recount, it was it was very intense. And one of the things I remember is that there was a... an organized effort by, I don’t know whether it was the RNC or it was... it was right-wing groups, it was definitely Bush-campaign-oriented effort to bus in people to have a sort of siege at the Vice President’s house, and, so, they were all lining there, screaming, and it was kind of an assortment of groups. I mean, some of them were anti, um, were anti-abortion groups, and some of them were pro-gun groups, and some of them... they all had their different signs. But they were all screaming, “Get out of Cheney’s house,” the whole time. And I just remember being there next to my dad, because I went for a run, and I ran back through them, and I was very upset when I came into the house. And my whole attitude was, like, “We’ve got to fight back harder. And where are our crowds?” And my dad, I’ll never forget his response. He said, “We have to do what’s best for the country, and it is not good for the country to have this kind of divisiveness. And he was on the phone, really calling off the dogs. There were people who wanted to fan the... the flames of the racial issue and have real unrest. And he was on the phone asking them not to, because of what was best for the country not because of what was best for him politically. And that’s really who he is.

WALTERS : Do you remember the crowds outside screaming?

KRISTEN GORE : The crowds that were screaming outside our house, you know, “Get out of Cheney’s house.” And other things... of that nature, were really upsetting. It was difficult... It was just very... upsetting that someone would... yell those things at us. It felt... we felt sort of like... trapped in this... you know, little house with all these people yelling mean things. It’s no fun. You know, whether you’re a child of the person who they’re directed at, or anyone else. It... it wasn’t a good situation.

WALTERS : Were you scared?

KRISTEN GORE : I was scared that the truth was not going to come out. That’s what I was.

on edit: I am absolutely not calling for this type of behavior from anyone on "our side" - more trying to point out that "fighting fair" with the likes of these thugs may not quite cut it. In other words, yeah, if there's legitimate "dirt" to be slung, we should sling it. These morans are not fighting fair, and won't in 2004, and we should be able to counter that.

2. Just a caveat...
...the VP's house isn't on a street, it's inside the Naval Observatory which is enclosed by a cast iron fence. The house is about 100 yards from the fence. Still, this and the GOP-hired mob that stormed the office where the ballots were being recounted (West Palm Beach?) paints a pretty ugly picture of the Rethuglican Party!

3. Ugly is to nice a word. Evil is more like it.
I wonder how many "christians" were out there name calling? The religious right is becoming very dangerous.

21. GOP hired mob?
They were government paid employees - some working for DeLay! They were down from Washington on your tax dollar - pretending they were Dade Co residents.

5. It's Lieberman's home.
It's being forcefully occupied by the Cheney/Bush junta.

....and more than a few of our Scaife-funded punditry joined them, such as Laura Ingraham. Here's a photo of some of them on a November day.

8. here's what the DC freepers did in 2001
Completed our 28th month of consecutive Saturday White House protests against the Clinton administration. Hosted special White House protests the last two nights of the Clintons' reign: Bill Clinton's legacy speech on the 18th and the 'Count the Silverware' freep on the 19th.

Presented FR plaques of thanks to the Norwegian and Vatican embassies for putting up with us during the "Get Out of Cheney's House" protests.

Helped organize the FreeRepublic Inaugural Ball and Count the Silverware Party featuring Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee and his band, Capital Offense.

Conducted a month-long daily vigil in front of the Chinese embassy when the ChiComs held an American aircrew hostage.

On behalf of FreeRepublic, DC Chapter members presented FOX News' Brit Hume with a FR media award at his office.

Freeped Hillary Clinton's first fundraiser at her new D.C. mansion for Sen. Maria Cantwell in April. The protest was reported by major newspapers in D.C., NYC, and Washington state, causing Hillary to keep advance publicity of her fundraisers there out of the press.

Freeped Bill Clinton up close and personal at a JFK School of Government conference in D.C., causing him to sneek out the back of the Hotel Washington after he was humiliated by us when he entered it in our presence.

Freeped Dan Rather at a booksigning appearance in D.C. Rather was positioned in front of a large picture window where his audience faced us and our signs out on the sidewalk.

Hosted the Third Annual White House Pimp Corps Dinner FReep where we razzed the liberal media and politicians and met with FRiends such as Barbara and Ted Olson and Matt Drudge.

Helped FR (along with diotima and Clinton's a liar) get Rush Limbaugh to see that FReepers were not the nut jobs who were spamming his e-mail with hate messages by meeting and speaking with him at a book party in D.C. for his brother David. Rush posted our pictures and put a link to our after action report on his website for 4 days.
From July to early September, we were part of FR's coast-to-coast Gary Condit freeps over the disappearance of Chandra Levy, which included freeps at his Adams-Morgan lovenest and on Capitol Hill. Those protests rated coverage in The Washington Post, The Washington City Paper, CNS.com, local TV news and FOX News Channel.

In August, we demonstrated at the White House to call attention to the plight of the Klamath Basin farmers and the firefighters who died that summer as a result of the Endangered Species Act. We collected hundreds of signatures for the farmers got our fellow citizens to think about the abuses happening under the ESA.

Also in August, we organized a White House victory tour for one hundred FReepers through the office of Rep. Bob Barr.
In September, we founded Operation Infinite FReep to support America, our troops, President Bush and the victims of 9-11. Actions included the September 29 counter demonstration against anti-WTO commie-peaceniks who marched on D.C. This was the first time anywhere in the world that anyone organized resistance to the riotous thugs who terrorized cities around the globe with their actions.

We successfully defended the flag at the Navy memorial from the commies and demoralized the anti-war movement for many months by peacefully standing up to them. This was their first big action after 9-11 and we met them with a flag-waving patriotic resolve that blew their minds (literally).

Because we were peaceful, press coverage was minimal, but the AP ran a photo that was picked up by some newspapers across the country, along with coverage in the local D.C. and Baltimore papers and local TV. Reuters TV took lots of video, but we have no idea what was broadcast around the world. We did dozens of interviews that day, and used the opportunity to educate the left-leaning media about the nature of the anti-war protesters and how this war was different from the Vietnam era. Later, we apologized to the press for not giving them the violence they wanted (hehe.)

As a result of our demeanor that day, we were considered for an appearance on ABC News' Nightline, but we were passed over for a known quantity: The Heritage Foundation.

In October, we hosted "Family Flag Day" at the White House where we encouraged families to come out and fly the flag. Unfortunately, President Bush issued a terror alert the day before, so the turnout totalled about forty FReepers. However, the AP ran a photo of Dave Dilegge's son holding an American flag that was picked up by dozens of Sunday papers across the country with combined circulation of well over a million copies.

The weekend before Halloween we held a counter-demonstration by the White House against a small anti-war protest. By agreement with law enforcement, we did not organize a direct confrontation with them this time, but a few FReepers went to their march and peacefully confronted them.

In November, we had back-to-back freeps of Bill and Hillary Clinton at D.C. fundraisers. Bill was once again humiliated up close and personal, this time at Smith Bagley's in Georgetown. This featured the first time (I think) that Bill actually spoke to FReepers protesting him.

The following night, we freeped a fundraiser at Hillary's for her Hillpac. We learned and reported that the hired help was complaining about the low turnout at her fundraisers there.

Also in November, as part of Operation Infinite FReep, we commenced a weekly vigil at the Pentagon, which we are still maintaining to this day, for those murdered in the 9-11 terrorist attacks by creating a memorial to the two FReepers who died in the attacks: Barbara Olson and John Moran. The memorial (and FR) was recently reported in The Washington Times.

7. I wonder if he's ever there.
As wealthy as he is, he must have a much larger home somewhere else. For Cheney, moving to the VP's house would be like moving into a 1-room efficiency for the rest of us...

11. No I'm not - and said so
Edited on Sat Oct-04-03 10:01 PM by nu_duer
I pointed out in the edit footnote that I was not calling for anyone on our side to do such things.

I guess I just read this account of what type of people we're up against and got infuriated at the pigs and felt a need to vent, and to remind us of what our opponents are capable.

I am of the opinion that these types of thugs will not be beaten on the battlefeild of ideas, and that we choose not to "fight dirty" at our own expense.

but only self defense against those who are dirty fighters, and not against their family members. Just the way I am.

10. Agree
"...if there's legitimate "dirt" to be slung, we should sling it."

I agree with your sentiment - but I wouldn't mind if it went beyond "legitimate dirt" (as in - the Dem. equivalent of the Wiley Bros.)

It's one thing to protest, it's another to disturb the peace and harass people for days on end.

14. How do we go about avoiding the inevitable...
...swinging? Do these people realize how angry we are? Do they want a boot on their neck when they lose power? I struggle with this. I want to be fair minded, I want to believe in the "nature of our better angels", but I also want to kick their asses. I want to make them think twice about ever trying to hijack this country again. I want them in jail. I want them serving time, taking the place of non-violent drug offenders. Lock the treasonous thugs up, it would be just, i find myself thinking. Sometimes I think about the misconceptions and willful ignorance on parade. About how FOX viewers seem happy with having the amount of real information in their minds crowded out by misinformation and complete pablum. I think sometimes that they are too stupid to be allowed to vote.

Then I begin to finally understand how it is they became what they are today, I take a step back, breathe deeply, and hope and pray it all works out without bloodshed.

...leap into a thread and "blow their cover" with thuggish behavior, in a thread that points out their thuggish behavior. No, they are most certainly the traitors. They hate more than half of the citizens of the US, they hate our freedoms. They are punks.

24. "calling off the dogs" just makes me mad
my dad, I’ll never forget his response. He said, "We have to do what’s best for the country, and it is not good for the country to have this kind of divisiveness." And he was on the phone, really calling off the dogs.... because of what was best for the country not because of what was best for him politically.

I've no doubt Gore acted with the best interests of the country in mind, but that's not how it turned out, is it? The best for the country - the world, even - would have been to keep Bush and Cheney out of office, period. There are things worse than "divisivness." We've seen them.
