What about that young man who "stole" the bus?
I have been trying to find out what happened to that young man who hotwired a bus in NO and rescued 70 or 100 strangers. As I rememebr, he drove the bus to the Astrodome and then turned it over to the authorities. I seem to remember that he was arrested for "stealing" the bus, but I can't find anything on it. Does anyone here know what happened to him?

5. JABBAR GIBSON!!
From USA Today, Sept. 9-10-11, "Heros come in all ages":

"Absconding with a school bus doesn't usually warrant a hero's welcome. But the first bus of New Orleans evacuees to reach Houston's Astrodome was driven by Jabbar Gibson, 20, who sort of stole it - at the hint of a police officer who knew quicker help wouldn't arrive. Gibson, who had never driven a bus before, picked up 70 stranded people, who pooled their money to buy gas for the bus and diapers for the babies on board. "I don't care if I get blamed for it as long as I saved my people," Gibson said.

MY MAN (he's just a kid, really)!!! I have cut out the teeny photo of him that accompanies this teeny article, and tomorrow I'm blowing it up on the copy machine and he's going on a verrry special place on my living room wall. Can you imagine, driving a BUS all that way? I remember the night they arrived, the blurb I read said a "renegade" bus had arrived like 8 hours early at the 'dome, and I said, far freakin' out. If I could ever meet this young man, it would be one of the greatest honors of my life.

Yeah, those Navy pilots, what the hell were they THINKIN'??!!

6. Article here
Here's part of the article that I read:
---------------------------------------------------------------------

http://www.newschannel5.tv/2005/9/1/4255/Taking-refuge-in-the-Astrodome

HOUSTON -- Thousands of refugees of Hurricane Katrina were transported to the Astrodome in Houston this week. In an extreme act of looting, one group actually stole a bus to escape ravaged areas in Louisiana.

About 100 people packed into the stolen bus. They were the first to enter the Houston Astrodome, but they weren't exactly welcomed. The big yellow school bus wasn't expected or approved to pass through the stadium's gates. Randy Nathan, who was on the bus, said they were desperate to get out of town.

<snip>

Eighteen-year-old Jabbor Gibson jumped aboard the bus as it sat abandoned on a street in New Orleans and took control.
<snip>

Authorities eventually allowed the renegade passengers inside the dome. But the 18-year-old who ensured their safety could find himself in a world of trouble for stealing the school bus.

"I dont care if I get blamed for it," Gibson said, "as long as I saved my people."

2. I thought he "commenderred" the bus.
Now if he stole the bus, that would be using it for his own personal profit. Doesn't seemto me like he stripped it down and sold the parts. Nor did he charge fares to the people he picked up. Perhaps he should have just stayed there and died with the other 70 or so people he picked up.

The kids a hero in my book!

3. That's why I put "stole" in quotation marks. He is a hero,
and he should be hailed as such and rewarded.

4. What about the NY Times report of Navy helicopter pilots
being reprimanded for rescuing people?
