-snip-

Seventy-six-year-old Cass Ballenger gave vent to his suspicions and frustrations with the Council on American-Islamic Relations in an interview with The Charlotte Observer, a newspaper popular in the North Carolina district he represents in Congress, which published his remarks on Saturday.

He said the proximity of CAIR headquarters to the couple's Capitol Hill home "bugged the hell" out of his wife.

"Diagonally across from my house, up goes a sign -- CAIR ... the fund-raising arm for Hezbollah," Ballenger was quoted as saying. "I reported them to the FBI and CIA."

-snip-

That's two-and-a-half blocks from the Capitol," he pointed out, "And they could blow it up."

1. I get harrassed all the time
as does my husband, Qayyoum. We are converts, and have found it prudent to use our birth names so that we can keep our jobs and not be hassled. There is a lot of anti-Islamic literature being floated around by right-wing religious groups (I hesitate to call them Christian, as Jesus taught love and compassion, not hate), citing "quotes" from the Qur'an that don't come from any translation I've ever read. On one board I frequent, I'm called a terrorist and told to "go back to my country". Think that's hilarious, as I'm a direct descendant of Mayflower Pilgrims and my husband is one fourth Cherokee.

2. I'm sorry
I'm sorry that idiots like them exist; just remember, the vast majority of us aren't intolerant pinheads, k? :)

4. I'm sorry for you. There is so much hate and intolerance in this country
The people you are encountering are not true Christians, I'm sure you know that. This is some sort of recent phenomena over the last few decades where unhappy people are 're-born' into this terrible right wing Southern Baptist faith of hate. It has claimed members of my family and it is an awful thing. They shun real religious leaders and the ones leading them seem to be Republican Team Leaders.

Stay safe!

3. I'll bet the strain and tension of living near those evildoers
bothered the Congressman so much that he was forced
to start boinking his 32 year-old secretary thus
putting an even greater strain on his marriage.
