Israel strikes inside Syria...

Israeli warplanes attacked an Islamic Jihad training base deep in Syria in retaliation for a suicide bombing at a Haifa restaurant that killed 19 people, the army said Sunday. Israeli media said it was the first Israeli attack on Syrian soil in more than two decades.

Wonder if the right-wing born agains see this as a sign of the end times? Wonder if the neocons see this as an excuse to stretch our troops even thinner and invade Syria? Wonder if this will start another Israeli-Arab war?

will do next. They've been wanting to go after Syria for a LONG time. Now, the Israelis have made the first foray into that country. And it's in response to a Palestinian suicide bomber, which gives them some political cover.

No matter what it is in response to, the fact that the Israelis continue to build new settlements and the continuing construction of the "fence" makes it plain to the Palestinians that there is really no chance of them ever getting their own state regardless of what propaganda comes from Bush and Sharon. This whole roadmap has been a fiasco. There was never any real intent on the Israeli part to live up to their side of the deal, and given that fact, the Palestinians refuse to discontinue the attacks on Israeli civilians, which I find to be a cowardly way to operate.

Watch for the Bush administration to condone this attack into Syria. In fact, the justifications for it should start coming out of the mouths of Rummy and Powel any time now.

There has to be honesty from both the Israelis and the Palestinians, good-faith negotiations, and both sides have to make positive moves to show that they are willing to end the decades of killing. But why should Israel ever feel that they need to give up territory or set boundaries for a Palestian state when they have the full backing of this government?
