I think there are several kinds of voters who will go for Arnold. A substantial number will vote for him due to his iconic movie star status. Sad but true. Others will give him the outsider-coming-in-to clean-up vote. A lot of people are voting anti-Davis, and Arnold may benefit from Bustamente's association with Davis. It's still incredible to me that people can ignore the revelations of the last few days, but many are apparently willing to believe that this is just smear politics.

I've been wondering what will happen if he gets elected. From what I've been reading, the sexual harassment allegations are but the tip of a very dirty iceburg. What happens, for instance, if the swell of serious allegations against him keeps growing after he takes office?
Could he end up with criminal charges against him? Civil lawusits?

Not gonna happen. He's rich, white and a Republican. They get a pass, remember? Civil lawsuit, maybe.

What will happen if he gets elected is that he'll be a lame duck. He STILL has Democrats in the top spots (A.G., Treasurer, Lt. Gov.), and a Dem. legislature. That adds up to three years of gridlock and non-stop investigation of this dweeb.

I would hazard a guess and say it is a person who has no appreciation for the importance of the role of government in their lives and thinks its all one big joke. If its all a joke then it is permissable to vote for the clown, I really do think that is their midset, its just a hoot ....

care more about the GOP then the people of California. This has been set up for while, since Hatch wants to change the constitution so Arnold can run for president. Have they no shame?

I have a theory about Republicans. I think they vote the way they do because they think by voting Republican they will be become rich like the people they are voting for. In reality, it is just the opposite--live like a Republican, vote Democratic.
My theory about these Californians who vote for Arnold is that they think that the star shine will rub off on them....

It you are the type of person who takes the time to register to vote, keep it current, and actually go to the polls, sign in, get a ballot, go to the booth ... this kind of person is going to vote for Arnold Schwartzenegger? I can't imagine it. Of course, the polls tell me I'm wrong, so...

Many of these people probably have never voted before (and will hopefully never vote again). They might or might not even know that one must register first, some time before the election. I suspect that many will just show up at the polls, ANY poll, and expect to register and vote right there!

But what do I think they are like?? I see a young white male with his cap turned backwards, opaque eyes, and yelling TERMINATOR!! WOOO HOO!!!

I informed from that premise that Larry Flynt is better qualified because he built a huge enterprise, made lots of money, and came from a dirt poor background. The person did not like my answer.

I had a conversation last night with 4 voters who plan to vote for Arnold. We were seated together at a dinner table. One was a small business owner, the other a nurse, the other I don't know. and the other a run of the mill racis who was silenced by his daughter (she begged for the conversation to end once it took this turn and it did.)

The businessman was parroting what one could hear on any of the news stations (car tax, illegal immigrant licenses, etc) the nurse saw it as an opportunity to make ALL politicians more accountable, the daughter didn't express an opinion and the racist guy was a friendly ignoramus to whom I said "I have no interest in opinions based on irrational fears"

I focussed the conversation on policy and pulled their reasons out from under them like a rug. I pointed out that Arnold can't repeal the car tax, that vehicle licenses raise fees and that I can think of no better way to combat terrorism that by having a PICTURE and an address of people who may be here illegally, that the recall would only lead to more recalls and that with a Democratic legislature Arnold might not just face recall but IMPEACHMENT if there is any merit to the charges against him.

In the end, we were all friendly and had a great conversation that stayed VERY civil (although it HAD to given the event I was attending).

Nobody changed ANYBODY's opinion but I do know I sowed SOME seeds of doubt on Arnold's promises as I promised to back up what I was saying with actual laws.

The one thing we all DID agree on was the sorry state of the media...I hated Rush, O'Reilly etc and they hated several pundits on the left. I suggested we could get an anchor, tie the whole bunch of pundits to it and take them out to sea and toss them in the ocean in place of information that allows people to form their own opinion.

The interesting thing is that ALL OF THEM agreed with that. The businessman said he USED to listen to Rush but that he realized the guy was inflammatory and that that was part of the problem.

That much was good.

The people that are most strongly pushing him are the same ones that decry Hollywood for promoting moral depravity and violence in our youth. They bellow that any actor or performer that has the insolence to comment on politics or policy should STFU or suffer blacklisting.

ThomWV, I think you have it. A friend whose sister-in-law lives in Houston tells me about a remark that was made prior to bush's selection. My friend, a serious, adamant, strongly principled Democrat, asked her Houston SIL why she should vote for bush. The response? "Oh, George. He's a hoot!" Some people really think this way. They think it's just a big party and they think the "C" in CEO stands for "coke."

While Pete's question is interesting, I'd like to take off on a tangent and ask, "What kind of woman would vote for Arnold?" You see them standing at the rallies with their signs, so they are definitely out there. But as a woman who's no stranger to a grope (I respond with a physical slap--I don't think about it--it's just instantaneous), I'd like to know what type of woman would vote for this crude boor.

I would dare to say most women have experienced the insult of a grope. It's like child molestation--out there and in significant proportions. Not talked about, however.

So what type of woman would vote for Arnold, at this point?

could it be women who have not gotten much WANTED sexual attention, and who would find it flattering if a "hunk" like Arnold (married or not) groped them because they would confuse it with a compliment? It's also my hypothesis that Repugs in general are empathy-challenged and do not understand harm unless it happens directly to them (at which point it becomes the most important issue in the world), so they find it easy to blame Arnold's victims or dismiss or trivialize their concerns. Arnie supporters probably have a way to blame Enron's actions on people it victimized also.

Also there is the anti-intellectual aspect to it as well. You can describe Arnold many ways, but "ivory tower egghead" isn't one of them. He is a celebrity, but he isn't smart, he's like one of us. A guy you could have a beer with.

Put that together and it works out like Steven Colbert said on the Daily show. You want the "impulse zone" to take over "Me like Arnold movies, me make him governor!" so don't think about it, or else you will realize he is in no way fit for the job.

I completely agree that Arnold isn't going to win Jeopardy. However, I disagree with the idea that he would condescend to have a beer with Joe Schmoe Republican.

I think that most people who would vote for Arnold have no knowledge of what it takes to run a government. They naively think that all insiders (i.e. those with experience) are corrupt and all outsiders are naturally pure. They think that all one needs is "good intentions" to run a government. Ironically, I doubt that many of these people would so readily dismiss the importance of experience in other fields such as medicine or law.

A television news anchor was interviewing a lady about the recall...when asked "Are you going to vote for the recall of Gov Davis"...the lady said.."Oh yes...most definetly"...
The reporter then asked..."Who are you going to vote for...?"...the lady replied..."Oh I don't know...but definetly Republican"...

Just like Chimpboy, Ahhnold tosses the average working person a few scraps,as in state tax refund or maybe in that car property tax that he claims he'll roll back.

What those dumb-asses never take into account is all the other goods,services etc...that are raised quietly to make up for all the highly publicized cuts. In the end the average person pays more than the tax cuts will ever get them and don't even have the brains to realize what just happened to them. Meanwhile the state debt,just like the federal debt continues to climb,but...there's always a Clinton to blame, now isn't there??
