CBS News: very moving mother's story of KIA son
the name, I'm pretty sure was Lynn Braddock.

came at the end of the broadcast and was of significant length.

photos of his childhood, mother talks of his decision to join, how she was informed, and the funeral with flag draped coffin. her anger and pain.

<close paraphrase>
"the whole world's heard should be breaking. for him. and the others. he was beautiful."

it wasn't an anti-war piece IMHO.

but it was deeply humanizing through the specific story.

if it hasn't played in your market, it's painful but worth catching if you don't see enough coverage of the human cost of this war.

2. Here's an article about him.
Appparently, he died while trying to save someone else from drowning. Sounds like he was a great guy.

3. I don't know if the piece was anti-war in intent, but I thought it was
certainly anti-war in effect. Her anger at how her son had been needlessly sent off to war was intense.

I was very surprised to see such a long segment devoted to a single death. As far as I can tell, the US media are mostly ignoring the casualties. It seems we're supposed to honor the troops when they march off to fight, but we're supposed to forget about them when they're injured or killed.

I wish they would do more of these reports. I also wish they would do similar pieces on the Iraqis who have died as a result of our immoral war and occupation. I imagine there are any number of grieving parents over there with a moving story to tell.
