The men who make the women, and men, of Grand Isle cry are members of the 115th Field Artillery Battalion of Memphis and Henderson, Tenn. The artillery unit, whose members are cross-trained as military police officers, have been in Louisiana for nearly two weeks, mostly doing humanitarian work such as cleaning up the Sureway. Among their other tasks, they're trying to make it possible for hurricane victims to again be able to run to their local store for the ice, bread, milk and Band-Aids that most of us take for granted.

The 115th's soldiers are joined in their Grand Isle deployment by a small security detail from the Tennessee Air National Guard. The units have orders to stay at least 30 days, maybe more.

"We've patched some roofs, cut a lot of trees and cleared roads, and we've given out a lot of food and water and ice,'' Capt. John Wilkes of Savannah, Tenn., said.

"These people down here are amazing, and they are very appreciative. They don't want us to leave,'' said Wilkes, a marketing representative in his hometown.
