Rove Blew it - Again.
Why was this not done as an official address to Congress? Everything he asked for has to be done by Congress. They would have been on camera and forced to clap - or not. This means did he really really really mean the speech, if he wasn't going to put republicans on the spot to support it. Just like his Social Security fiasco.

1. It was a very poor presentation.
The goal was to have a Reagan-type speech. He was supposed to appeal to images that have been planted in the viewing public's brain from years of viewing television. Reagan played the cowboy image that most people at that time were familiar with from countless meaningless John Wayne movies.

Bush needed to appeal to a few simple emotions. Like him or not, most could agree that his "bullhorn speech" connected with a large portion of the public after 9-11. This one fell flat. It had far too much information -- exactly as you note, it would have been better suited for congress. As it is, it exposed him as incapable of leading the country out of the mess he has helped create.

2. How can you incite emotions, without using emotions. He was
not monotone, but dull.

7. "dull"
You are being kinder than I am able to be. I thought that there was a smirk pulling at his clown face several times. I think he knows he is lying through his teeth, and is a tad bit giddy thinking he is fooling people.

18. They would need
to drug the public to convince them it was a serious speech.

6. Was stunned that the imagery
was completely at odds with the message. Finally everyone has a reason that Bush is not Commander in Chief. He is the classical photo op president without substance. Reagan had Michael Deaver and Bush is relying on who? Not that I particularly care, but the Bush White House has gone to hell in a handbasket when previously they were a tightly controlled secret cabal. Now the professional disarray is out there for everyone to see!

23. Even Brian Williams, NBC commentator, said the background was
a beauty spot and not really representative of how the speech should have been backgrounded.

Brian Williams was clearly on a rubble-filled, unlit street.

Just more manipulation by the Gang of Thieves...

He got out of town, back to the safety of lil' ol' Washington, on U. S. 1 - pretty damn fast. If there had been any residents left, they might have run him out of town on a rail -- if there really IS a rail!

28. It's weird to give a speech and talk about "Armies of Compassion"
and there are - gasp - no people anywhere in sight!

14. I was honest.
I noted his bullhorn speech won wide approval. This was hardly that type of moment. Perhaps you disagree.

30. What's your point, 'Lee?' You were on Kerry on that SUV thread.
Now you are here pointing out the obvious, that on this Dem board, the worst president in U.S. history is largely disapproved of. What are you trying to prove, eh?

10. It's NOT Policy, it's Politics
this is just for the rubes. This will not fly in congress.

Seriously, he was just looking for a little hug, since he just discovered people hate him

He didn't mean it. It was a bunch of crazy promises which will not go anywhere, but he will get his bounce.

on the spot.

Can you imagine him giving that speech in front of Sheila Jackson Lee or Maxine!

into liberals in front of the entire nation. Now he has congress critters he can call out (if he is so inclined) before 2006 if this doesn't get done. You can't make this stuff up...
