OK folks, I plead ignorance......

How does this "kick" deal work?

I read the FAQs and the rules but can't figure it out. I guess it is similar to the "greatest page" vote, but that you click on something.

Do the mods count the kicks and what and how does anything happen?

1. A kick just adds to the number of responses so your thread stays near the

top. Threads are automatically ordered according to the number of responses.

It "kicks" it to the top of the thread list, in other words.

The occasional kick is fine. But it's usually abused on most community message boards.

3. If you go to a page

like the general discussion page, the threads with the most recent posts are at the top. So a "kick" is a post, and it moves the thread back up to the top. Some readers never get to the second page, so if you want a thread read, someone has to post. Sometimes people don't have much to say so they just "kick".

To recommend a thread, there is a link for that right under the original post. Only the recommended votes get the thread to the greatest page, not the kicks.

7. It keeps a thread close to the top. Basically, it shows activity in the

form of replies to keep a thread "in play" until others can see it, especially if it is a very informative thread or a great read in some way.

8. You can often devine the lineage of a particular poster--

in a lot of r/w sites, the term used is "bump;" here in wild-ass land the "kick" is preferred. This can be handy in spotting a freeping troll or potential disruptor.
