nine years since welfare reform.
Thank god we've kept some poor folks from cheating the system and getting a little extra undeserved cash. I sleep better at night now. How about you?

3. yeah, after all on corporate welfare
there is a huge difference between scamming on 150B versus 150 dollars a month.

yeah, anybody notice the Repukes are gonna try to roll back that great Prescription drug benefit and food stamps in order to pay for Katrina?

Good job folks, don't even consider to stop feeding the Halliburton
or that major corporate pork bills you passed totally in the trillions at this point...don't touch a dime of those tax incentives you gave to big oil..

nope, those damn welfare welchers don't need to eat, that's the answer.

5. since poverty continues to rise, welfare reform is a failure...
...that is, if eliminating poverty was the objective.

8. I think it was more a
Grinch style keep more money from each individual objective. Kind of a screw-each-individual deal.

15. We didn't even get the side benefit
of getting wingers to STFU about welfare. Which was all the hope I had for it in the first place.

9. It was an attempt to change a lifestyle - to help folks break out of the
dependency cycle.

But poverty has indeed risen - but I do not believe that can be laid at the feet of Welfare reform.

10. I think welfare reform - or deform, as I think of it -
didn't help a lot. But what would help is having a real job market. And that's not gonna happen with Repugs in power.

14. True welfare reform
Would include education.

A good job market would be a great help also, although perhaps we could just send the jobless overseas to where their jobs went.

Oh, but that's right, if the poor ere sent offshore with their jobs, who would pump the gas and flip the burgers.

Here in Indiana welfare assistance is simply handing you a WalMart or Mc Donalds application, and disdain for you if there are no job openings there when you apply.

16. not completely
but the reality is some people just fall down and need help for a little bit. I'm sure there were some problems, but the "reform" basically denies those that need help..
but I agree with your main point that so many other factors are the reason more and more are being pushed into poverty.

11. And 9 million more in poverty under George W Bush....
Any correlation? Yes, welfare reform looks great when the economy is going good... But, when not so good....?

12. Nine years since the Feds put a five-yr lifetime limit on getting cash aid for
poor children. Do the math and you'll understand why many more people are in EXTREME poverty and don't trust the government.
