Krugman: "Tragedy in Black and White" (full column FREE at pkarchive.org)

(Click "Columns" and then column title.)

By three to one, African-Americans believe that federal aid took so long to arrive in New Orleans in part because the city was poor and black. By an equally large margin, whites disagree.

The truth is that there's no way to know. Maybe President Bush would have been mugging with a guitar the day after the levees broke even if New Orleans had been a mostly white city. Maybe Palm Beach would also have had to wait five days after a hurricane hit before key military units received orders to join rescue operations.

But in a larger sense, the administration's lethally inept response to Hurricane Katrina had a lot to do with race. For race is the biggest reason the United States, uniquely among advanced countries, is ruled by a political movement that is hostile to the idea of helping citizens in need. ...

(edited again to make the subject line clearer -- this site archives Krugman columns, including the latest, and doesn't charge for them)

2. Yeah! Your link takes us to the full column. You might want to post
it at understandinglife's thread in Comment 1 so other DU'ers can read the entire thing.

Thanks!

3. Can't read the full column without being a subscriber to...
Times Select, and being one of the poor Krugman is writing about (a Caucasian methodically denied essential services specifically because of white America's vicious hostility toward blacks), I haven't the $50 that would gain me admission to the inner sanctum.

5. Sorry but I found nothing on that link save a lot of advertisements...
for Krugman's books and a running dialogue between his fans -- kind of like a fan club.

a tiny fraction of the material on the left, but I finally brought it into full view by repeatedly hitting the "refresh" icon. For my comment on the Krugman piece itself, please see below.

Edit: correcting reference to my previous post.

9. Thank you; this is a profound, perhaps even pivotal indictment.
But it also -- sadly -- articulates a dread truth I have long suspected: that white America's hatred and fear of blacks is undiminished since the days of the Civil Rights Movement (in which I was a participant). Hence my oft-repeated argument that the atrocity of New Orleans was indeed deliberate, at the very least Bush pandering to the racist pigs who make up his Christofascist core of support. (Remember that, throughout the South of the Civil Rights Movement era, the standard euphemism for the Ku Klux Klan was "the Saturday night men's Bible-study class.")
