3. I hope she is ok!!
Arrested or not, there is no good reason to yank her down like that! Approached by police, I'm sure she would have surrendered peacefully'; that's just the kind of Lady she is.

This sucks. But it does show she is being taken seriously.

activities, citing "public saftey". This is the kind of "Blue Fascism" that occured in the sixties. It's likely a coordinated effort by the FBI and local police.

18. Well, fuck permits then
I've always said that a demonstration with a permit was more properly called a 'parade'.

It's more in the police's interest for us to be getting permits than it is in ours. When we agree to getting a permit, we are also drawing a bright boundary around what we plan and do not plan to do. We provide our route, and the 'hours' that the demonstration will go on. All they gotta do is stand on the side of the street and direct traffic, unless they want to 'have fun' being assholes.

Without a permit, they have to think anything can happen. And isn't that the point of a mass 'protest' anyway? To show that if they don't hold up their part of the social contract between government and it's citizenry, that we won't hold up ours by accepting their authority, either?

If this government doesn't have the consent of the populace, why do we consent to this government? Sure -- fear of violence, which is very real. But that's the point of getting 100,000s of people together in one place, isn't it? -- safety in numbers. They can haul away 20 or 100 people and get away with it, but there's no way they can haul away 10,000. At least not with most of the military in Iraq...

In any case, if the trend is going to be not granting protest permits, they are going to take things up a notch, whether they realize it or not.

39. Back in '68 I was assisting a road manager for a rock group scheduled to
play in L.A.'s Griffith Park. The organizer of the event had a permit. It was a mini-Woodstock. That was the problem. Too many long-haired peaceniks enjoying themselves.

Plainclothed "hippie" looking cops were roaming throughout the crowd with their walkie-talkies concealed in crinkled brown paper bags.

About a half hour into the event, police cruiser units began arriving at the park and surrounding the event's participants.Next thing we know, a cop is on the bullhorn declaring the gathering to be an illegal assembly.

Most of the people were leaving peacefully mumbling "what a bummer" to themselves. The police tried to provoke them into reacting violently so they could "justifiably" crack some heads.

This kind of police harrassment occured quite often in Los Angeles during the late sixties.

It's like you said. Fuck a permit

If true, Cindy Sheehan joins ranks with another great woman activist, Emma Goldman, who 112 years ago also in the summer there in Manhattan was arrested for her political activism.

Cindy, you are in the finest of historical company now! I salute you.

53. I Just Emailed Clinton about Cindy and the burning of food for the Gulf
Evacuees and No Rubber Stamp for Roberts.

Spent a couple of hours on http://www.Congress.org emailing both Repub and Dems including Rep. Hinchey brave letter with 40 signatures for Fitzgerald to expand his investigation, Thank Hinchey and asked others to join him.

On Congress.org, if you click the second box under email form your letter will be published online. Not too many people writing Maryland Reps. It was over a week since I sent emails and some of mine were at the top. I know it is boring and doesn't seem to do much good but if you are in the Resistance, it is a small price to pay and it may encourage Fitzgerald, or the Pentagon or the CIA or Bilderberg who like more anonymity and who might not want to spend the rest of their lives in a Fallout Shelter however luxurious into acting if they can see the American people despise what is being done to them enough to take the time to write their Senators, Congresspersons and media.

And it just might give the above the support they feel they need to act. Please spend a few minutes a day emailing. I shouldn't try to do it all at once. It is easier to email a little each day. Get involved, its your country too!!

I hope Cindy is okay, can't find any reference to anyone who has talked to her since the arrest of her team member Zool. I wrote to Congress about releasing Zool also. I mostly send paragraphs from articles and a few comments of my own with URLs. Has anyone bailed out Zool? They will try to get to Cindy through her friends. Thats how the KGB and Bushco work, threatening and harming friends and family of those who have any name recognition.

Prior problems with using amplified speaking. I don't see why not. And I don't see how you speak to a crowd without it. And I can't imagine the same treatment for our dear Murdering Cheerleader. But I would bet that's the problem.

34. I just spoke to the people at Union Square around 6:00
Edited on Mon Sep-19-05 07:38 PM by Stephanie

I stopped by on my way home. The woman running the information table said they had a permit to be there, but did not have one for the amplified microphone. They were issued a permit for the microphone for a "speak out" event on Saturday. On Sunday there were six bands playing there an event for Time Out New York. But the peace groups were denied a microphone permit for today. She didn't know the reason or if there was a reason given. So, when Cindy started speaking on the microphone they arrested Zool, the organizer. And they took the mike and amp. Cindy left with her group and was not arrested.

When I was there someone was speaking - on the back-up mike and smaller amp. This was around six tonight.

Sounds pretty well thought out to me.

It is decimating their ranks, they are getting called up left and right (many are reservists), and they are feeling the strain. Plus, DC may be occupied by the GOP, but it is a Dem town. So long as people are mellow, I would expect them to be as well.

43. NY Times Article Here
An antiwar speech by Cindy Sheehan, the mother of an American soldier killed in Iraq, was cut short yesterday after the organizer of the event was arrested and police officers confiscated his audio equipment.

The claps and cheers that had greeted Ms. Sheehan's arrival at the rally in Union Square quickly turned to furious chants of "Let her speak!" as officers ushered away the organizer, Paul Zulkowitz, who the police said lacked audio permits for the event.

Angry activists followed officers as they led Mr. Zulkowitz away, waving their fists and shouting, "Shame, shame, shame." Ms. Sheehan, who was visiting New York on the last leg of a bus tour across the country, was nearing the end of her speech when the police officers arrested Mr. Zulkowitz. She was whisked to a car by two supporters just before the police officers seized the microphone. Mr. Zulkowitz was arrested because he did not have a permit, said the commanding officer of the 13th Precinct, Inspector Michael J. McEnroy.

Detective Kevin Czartoryski said Mr. Zulkowitz was charged with unauthorized use of a sound device and disorderly conduct, and was released after being given a court summons.

46. It's unjust, but it's GOOD FOR OUR SIDE
There's no better way to get press than to show the government is censoring protest and unjustly arresting people.

The authorities are playing right into the protestors' hands when they arrest them. Now, the whole event becomes "public" and the police actions make the story reportable without the media seeming to take sides.

Not only are arrests unjust, they're really STUPID if conservatives just want Cindy to quietly go away.

This is going to get a lot more attention than if they had just let her have her 45 minutes.

... many onlookers were upset by the incident, with some saying it recalled the arrests of more than 1,800 protesters last year at the Republican National Convention.

"This is what's been happening for the last couple of years," said the co-chairman of the Green Party's Manhattan chapter, Daniel Starling, who attended the rally. "Every time we try to hold a demonstration, they arrest us" ...
