Just got some gusts of 45 MPH in Coral Gables a few moments ago.

I'd say the 1km number is the resolution size, i.e smallest size of an object (storm cell) radar image can show.

6. people were filling up their tanks in my part of S.F.-my husband just paid
$22.00 for 7 1/2 gallons of reg. unleaded gasoline.

11. I'm sure the oil executives
are creaming in their pants, while they're glued to the weather channel.

Expect gasoline to go back to 3.25 because Rita *might* knock out some oil rigs.

Damn. Lost power for 5 days after Katrina. What a PITA!

Flashlights and lanterns at the ready, coolers stocked with ice, hot tea and coffee in thermos' already.

12. we too were without power for 5 days after katrina
wow! i have to commend your readiness! I especially like the "the hot tea and coffee thermos'" all ready!

we just took the patio furniture inside and picked up loose ends in the yard. still have power (don't know whether we will later on)...

will go down to the nearest CIRCLE k FOR coffee if we loose power. they didn't the last time around.

18. Get a little camping burner too.
We have a one burner model that takes little cans of LP gas. Great for boiling some water and light duty cooking. Too late to get one now, but for next time get one.

13. and my neighbors next door have recently added a dog to their back yard.
i don't think that dog ever gets to go inside their house. And i don't know what they are going to do with it tonight. Just a few minutes ago the dog was barking like crazy... it breaks my heart to see this dog tied to a seagrape tree all day and all night long. It also breaks my heart to think that they just might leave him outside tonight during whatever storm winds/rain we might get.

My way of looking at it is that either they are just plain stupid.
Or they are montunos de monte adentro...althoug they've been living in U.S.A. for a good many years.
Or they are trying to make a guard dog out of their dog ... but even then...

14. Can you non-chalantly ask them if you can take the dog inside?
Go over and make up some bullshit about how you wouldn't mind and it would make you feel safer?

That would drive me right into the middle of next week to think some asshole was going to leave a dog outside in a hurricane! ARRRGGG! :(

19. that is a good idea. It is almost midnight and that dog is still barking.
I may just go out and ask them to please take their dog into their house for the night.

I have two dogs of my own--one of which is a new addition and they are learning to get along. I don't think I (or they) could quite manage another dog tonight.

I am totally mortified.

20. i don't know. the dog is tied to a very big sea grape tree which provides
a lot of shade during the day. It may provide some shelter from the rain. I don't know but that dog is still barking out there (it is now midnight).

24. i was up until about 2 AM this morning--the dog stopped barking a little
after one o'clock. I've no idea if they took him inside. I do really hope that they did take him inside at some point.

22. In a hurricane, even a dog house would become airborne
Houses get knocked off their foundations, so I doubt a dog house would be much protection for the dog. It needs to be inside the main house.

16. I lived in Miami Springs, just north of the Gables
most of my life until I moved to North Georgia in 1989. Glad I don't live there any longer. My daughter lives in Hollywood, so I hope Rita doesn't move too far north.
