Blanco was promised 500 buses
from FEMA and thought the promise was being kept...

there's more: FEMA didn't want Blanco using SCHOOL BUSES because they weren't air conditioned... Brown himself personally vetoed the school bus idea.

Here, at long last, is Blanco's side of the story

2. why Democrats get hammered over and over
Edited on Tue Sep-20-05 08:41 PM by xray s
Blanco should have been shouting about this from day 1.

Instead, she let the Rovians spin this for three weeks.

If she wants to make some noise, she should be getting on every cable network and ask for a true, independent investigation of everything that happened.

3. You got that right
Why the hell wasn't this shouted from the rooftops?

Too late now - Katrina's old news - standby for Rita coverage.

4. Nagin Also Talked About That
Those school busses in that photo were never in any evacuation plans. It was supposed to be mass transit busses. There was a question to the ability of the school busses to manuever in congested traffic and that school bus drivers were only part time employees while transit workers are full-time and were on call to man their busses. Most did, but only to bring people to the Superdome.

The evacuation of that many people on buses presented several logistical problems that were beyond Nagin's control. Once he gets these people on busses and headed out of town...where do they go? Whose responsible for where they end up? The state? FEMA? Look at the massive deal it was bussing 30,000 to the Astrodome...imagine trying to send twice as many onto already crowded interstates with no place to go.

I'm so sick of the blame game...and it's still going on. Yes, Nagin and Blanco made mistakes, but theirs were ones of commission, not omission. The focus must remain on why it took so long for a federal response and why it took 5 days to get basic items...food and water to thousands of distressed Americans in a major American city.
