I am worried about John McCain in 2008
Lets face it, McCain has a higher approval rating among Democrats than Republicans. If Republicans are smart enough to nominate him which I think after the Bush blunder they will be ready for a moderate and McCain or Gulliani (sp) will get the nod.

How would we run against McCain? I think we need to start building a war chest because I think he would be tough to beat no matter who we put up against him.

33. he would never get it
or the whole party would be so bruised during the primaries (as the powers to be in the various "bases" (religious right, monied cronies, and neocon fantasists) would pull double time trying to prevent his nomination) that any advantage he might seem to have today - would be dissipated.

3. Just keep hammering...
that he's stupid enough to support a man whose smear machine roasted him relentlessly during the 2000 primaries.

He may be a war hero, but he's an idiot who'll whore himself for their cause if he feels that there will be something in it for him in the long run.

And let's be clear. Not THIS Democrat. McCain has no standing with me. NONE.

14. That's right.
He's totally whored himself to the bush family in hopes of getting the nod in '08. The one thing that concerns me about the repugs is that by putting w in there the've shown they can "elect" the least qualified person to hold the office of President in modern times. It's all downhill from here. The hard part for the gop is done.

5. I'm not worried. He's ancient.
The guy is just too old, and I would absolutely make age an issue when it comes to McCain.

Also, we could point out his flip-flops. More importantly, attach him to Bush, because being attached to Bush will be the death knell of '06 and '08.

So, John McCain: Oldest President Ever.

Edited on Sat Sep-24-05 11:25 AM by VolcanoJen
That's how I'd approach it.

Think about it... 72 in 2008, 76 in 2012... he'd be 80 when he left office if he got 8 years.

America isn't going to go for that.

It's part of a multi-pronged attack.

And believe me, the Republicans will attack his age in that bloody primary they're going to have long before we Dems would ever have to bring it up.

If this were Sept. 06 I would be focused on the midterms but right now we don't even know who is running in 06. As if this little thread will have any impact on 06. :eyes: DU is a place for us to discuss topics like radio shows do. Their are no rules here on DU for when a topic can be discussed.

And hey! Quit talking about 06' we need to be focused on Roberts!

43. Dubya wasn't in bed with the religious right
until he ran for prez. Steve Forbes was decidedly secular, until his second run. McCain can easily join that parade if he wants a readymade voting bloc and a ferocious campaign apparatus... and he'll want it when the time comes.

41. True
I think McCain is more of a Diplomat than Bush and I don't think he actually would have taken us into Iraq in the first place. He probably would have done a better job building running the war and negotiating with other country's around the world if he had taken us in. Sure he supports the war now but taking us into a war and supporting one once we have gone are very different things. Perhaps he is worried about the far Right Republican base and is afraid to attack the war effort to much. Now their is a politician for you! Put politics about saving American lives.

Don't get me wrong, as I am no fan of McCain but he is certainly an improvement over Bush. Hell, anyone would be an improvement!

He doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of getting the Republican nomination.

The neocons want a puppet, and McCain ain't it.

Despite the media fawning all over him, McCain is as right-wing as they come and can't be trusted.

Besides, in 2008 he will be 72, and that's too damned old for the job.

39. History reminder
Back in '88, Bush1 took over from Reagan, saddled with that massive deficit
that crippled the economy and sent him packing in '92.
And this after he WON the first Gulf War!!
I pity the fool who follows *.
They'll probably face the same fate.

We need to retake the Congress, both House and Senate in '06,
which starting to look very likely to happen.
That way we can start to dismantle the fascist machine
that's eating our country alive and repeal all the vile legislation supporting it.

It's the only way whoever follows * might stand a chance of a second term.
