I just got home from the protest!

WHat a great day!
I never did get to meet other DUers though :)
They were saying (onstage) that they thought there were 300,000 there at the march, but I think there were more than that.

There was one small incident with the freepers where the march turned the corner up 16th street. There were a HANDFUL of freepers with signs like "AlQuida thanks you for your support" and Trust Jesus", (I don't know how that was to be interpreted) and then there were about thirty marchers standing in a semi-circle around the freepers shouting "BULLSHIT ! BULLSHIT !" so I think the freeprs were completely outnumbered.

I took the metro and there were a TON of people going to the march.
One fella said it was the George W Express. I think he meant EXPRESS out of office :)

Joaz Baez was excellent. I saw Cindy but didn't hear her speak. The punk rock sent me looking for food. Camp Casey was very crowded at that point. I was glad I got to look at it when it was quieter.
Maxine Waters gave a terrific speech... as did the woman from NOLA.
I turned some new ppeople onto DU!!!
I cannot believe how long the march took.
When I was leaving on the metro (FOUR HOURS LATER), there were STILL marchers coming down the street.

Pictures when I can post them; right now I need a shower and a cool drink!

All I can say is WOW!!!!

1. Sounds like it was great!
I was at a VERY small protest in So Cal. I couldn't go to the huge one in L.A., but I have found we small groups in So Cal have a tightly knit group, we all seem to be at the same events! Its like seeing family. We had lots of support from passers-by, it was great! We also had many, many older people 70-80's-ish. It was absolutely appalling to me to see mid 50's men drive past and give these older people the finger. I don't mind differences of opinion, but it seems to me that's almost like giving grandma the finger. It was great though, one woman, probably 75 yelled to a 20's young man and dad he should sign up and go if he supports bu$h so strongly. Only one person called us communists, so that wasn't bad. I would say very unscientifically of course, that even here in repug Orange County, support was about 90%. Also thought it was fantastic, one woman, at least 80, perfect grandma, came along and asked everyone what their email addie was. We have an untapped source of support with the oldsters. We need to figure out a way to get them involved here at DU. They have time, they like involvement and they HATE the way things are going and despise bu$h.

2. Good observation!
There were a surprising number of over 60's people at the march today in DC, too.

I was a bit apprehensive about going alone, because I am just recovering from a knee operation, but go I did.
I saw many people who were probably old enough to be suffering from arthritis, people in wheelchairs, even people on crutches.
So that gave me a sense of how strongly they gelt about making their voices heard for peace, and it heartenend me, and I was able to keep walking.

You are right about an untapped source in the older (and wiser) population. We need their voice of reason and their insight here on DU. There's a reason that early civilizations held great stock in their elders.

I saw them today and I was all grins. Also, a multitude of younger people in their 20's or younger.

3. I think I might visit one of the discussion groups they have locally
they seem to be very anxious to learn more about the "internets", I will introduce them to DU, perhaps some others, as well. I think I am getting close enough to being considered an oldster myself and KNOW I will still be as involved politically as possible. Maybe there are some that will help spread the word, they just need sources.
