"I will support [Cindy Sheehan] if she can promise me that"
"After we pull out of Iraq and Afghanistan, that the terrorists will no longer attack the United States of America and that there will be peace in this country, but I think history supports the fact that this is not going to happen. If we pull out, the next place we'll be fighting is in the streets of America, and I don't want to see that."

Gold Star Father justifying the occupation of Iraq.

1. Iraq has nothing to do with....ARGH!
You know what, just because someone is a Gold Star parent doesn't mean they know WTF they're talking about. In fact, I'd argue that some of these parents are so emotionally devastated, they have to believe what Bush is shoveling, because if they don't their kid died for nothing, and I can imagine that is unbearable.

But still. Facts would be nice. :eyes:

3. Right. ON.

That's the problem for a lot of these parents.

Their kids are buried with patriotic words so stirring and moving that they (temporarily at least) numb the pain.

I feel so bad for them.

It hurts to know they have to support the war to ease the pain.

on edit:I wouldn't want to cause these parents any more pain than they have already gone through.

9. Agreed
It is too sad ...

Our obligation is to do all we can to prevnt other parents (husbands, wives, children ...) from being forced into the same emotional justifications.

17. Yeah, after killing hundreds of thousands of Iraqis,
most of them innocent women and children, I am sure Osama and people like him can recruit even more Muslims who believe we've declared war on Islamic countries.

5. I will support war if
anyone could promise me that the terrorists will no longer attack the United States of America and that there will be peace in this country, but I think history supports the fact that this is not going to happen. If we stay in Iraq and continue to support regimes that support terrorism, the next place we'll be fighting is in the streets of America, and I don't want to see that.

6. This whole exercise is so fucking pathetic
These people are transferring their anger over the death of their loved one to a mother who lost her kid, because they do not want to ADMIT that their loved one died for bullshit.

This is rich fodder for psychiatrists and psychologists, frankly...

Paging Dr. Kubler-Ross, Dr. Elisabeth Kubler-Ross....

18. It's as much cognitive dissonance at work.
They don't want to admit, so they angrily reject any message that would attempt to force them to face reality.

7. Yes, the mom of a dead soldier IS responsible for stability in *'sIraqmire
So NOW supporters of the illegal war are looking to history. Hmm. I recall a time when we who predicted what was going to happen to Iraq were pessimists, naysayers, terrorist-sympathizers, and anti-American troop-haters. That for citing precedent and using reason and experience over faith in our (mis)leaders.
Also, I don't recall hearing Cindy ask for support. She's just a citizen exercising her rights, like any of us.
Gee, what a waste of time it is to even think of the myriad ways common sense fails these schmucks.

8. Good thing he has reasonable expectations
No one, including president dipsy himself, can promise we won't be attacked by terrorists again. But Cindy has to be all-knowing and all-powerful in order for anyone to be able to end the occupation. Riiiight.

This war has nothing to do with terrorism anything. In fact, if anything, it is the greatest anti-american terrorist recruitment tool there is.

10. What happens when the terrorists attack here again
and we're still in Iraq? It could occur, but I'd hate for it to happen just so I can tell this bozo "I told you so".

12. Where the hell do they get that idea?
I'm assuming these are moderately intelligent people, also grieving from the loss of loved ones. So how could they possible come to the conclusion that staying in or pulling out is going to make any difference at all? There are plenty of countries right now, that we are NOT occupying that are growing terrorists.

We need to get out because the war is wrong, and it's not doing a damn bit of good. And because many people are dying, every day for no real reason. Soldiers are coming home, without proper support, many have or will develop PTSD. Not to mention the ones that are permanently disabled or injured. And we've already had nasty budget cuts in the VA system.
If the terrorist decide to attack, the US being in those countries is not going to help us here.

Personally, I believe Iraq will ultimately became a fundamentalist Islamic state. Or another Saddam will rise from the ashes. I know they are trying hard to grasp at the idea of "democracy" and I wish only the best for the Iraqi people. But that's just an opinion that has nothing to do with terrorist attacks. I don't get where they are making the connection.

When my daughter (army) left Afghanistan, she told me the taliban were "all over the place, they just weren't in power any more" She also told me that the caves in Afghanistan go on for miles and miles and if someone wanted to hide out in there, they are not going to be found. Nice, huh?

14. They still don't get it, do they?
We were not attacked by Iraq! We were attacked by Al Qaeda, which the last time I checked, was based in Afghanistan. (But I could be wrong). (sarcasim!)

Futhermore, Iraq was not a terrorist country until after we invaded. We are the ones who helped turn Iraq into a terrorist country.
