Scientists capture giant squid on camera

LONDON, Sept 28 (Reuters) - Japanese scientists have taken the first photographs of one of the most mysterious creatures in the deep ocean -- the giant squid.

Until now the only information about the behaviour of the creatures which measure up to 18 metres (59 feet) in length has been based on dead or dying squid washed up on shore or captured in commercial fishing nets.

But Tsunemi Kubodera, of the National Science Museum, and Kyoichi Mori of the Ogasawara Whale Watching Association, both in Tokyo have captured the first images of Architeuthis attacking bait 900 metres (yards) below the surface in the cold, dark waters of the North Pacific.

"We show the first wild images of a giant squid in its natural environment," they said in a report on Wednesday in the journal Proceedings B of the Royal Society.

Cant' wait to see videos. I had great hopes for the experimental video cameras that one group attached to Sperm whales, and was sorely disappointed when they failed. Kudos to the Japanese team!

Though I really hope they are able to get all those "wild images" under control before they release the video -- just wouldn't do to have those suckers running around loose!

About killer squids.
Even the little guys can be nasty and they interview local fishermen off the Baja penisula who've been attacked and bear the scars.
Crazy seeing these things flying superfast towards the underwater camera!

This is so cool. Our Natural History Museum has a cast of a giant squid from the Ward's collection. The search for a living Giant Squid has captivated me. With all the pollution of the deep seas, I fear for them.

I get that feeling I had when I was a kid. That feeling that the world was huge, filled with mysteries. These days, it all seems so small.
