I graduated in a town in Texas that was known for it's racism
To the point that black people wouldn't even move there because of past lynchings in the recent past. I was ashamed to tell any of my friends that were black where I graduated from high school. So imagine my surprise when I see something like this...things do change for the better sometimes.

7. There used to be a motto for Greenville, TX
"Where the dirt is black and the people are White."

I don't remember when the motto was changed, but I think it was in the 70's

9. It also wasn't in the too distant past
Neither were the black churches being burned down in the nineties.
Racism dies hard in some places.:(

11. Yes, the sign was up on Lee Street in downtown Greenville
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 12:25 PM by Ishoutandscream2
until, I believe, 1966. One local had the audacity to tell me that the sign had nothing to do with race, but "white" stood for "pure." Yeah, right!

By the way, the sign on Lee Street said, "Blackest land, whitest people."

8. It's actually called "Whitesboro?"
Can't imagine why blacks wouldn't want to move to a place like that...

13. Perhaps the folks who started the town had the surnames:
White and Brown. Most likely it has nothing to do with racism.

Remember, Barry White was black and Frank Black is white...

-The former (Af. American) mayor of Cleveland was "Michael White"

-James Brown is ...brown.

-Charlie Brown is (although drawn) white,

16. And don't forget McFadden and Whitehead, a group from the 70s
who were both African American. It would be interesting to be black and have the last name Whitehead.

Of course, I had a French teacher who's last name was Malatesta, doesn't that translate to "bad head"?
