Who "died" so that I could state my opinions and beliefs?

I'm always hearing, "somebody died to give you the right to speak freely in America".

Where did this fallacy start and what line of reasoning supports it?

There has never,ever been a war or military action where Americans right to free speech was on the line, actually it's the militarism that goes along with an authoritarian government that, to me, represents the greatest threat to truthful self expression.

So where and how did this start?

Historians suggest that The British always treated us well and our POWs fairly well considering it was a war and that we had somewhat overreacted to declare it.

I do believe the entire war is the most fascinating ever and I think that guys like Samuel Adams, John Hancock, Ben Franklin & John Adams(albeit reluctantly), George Washington and others had amazing guts to take on the most powerful army in the world at the time over a matter of principles...

But I do think that those who questioned the neccesity of the war were justified in their line of questioning...

And no, the British didn't prevent our free speech, even though we were printing and shouting rather treasonous things towards the King and his troops well before the beginning of the war.

I am not saying this was a principle motive for the rebellion, but it was in the mix of disgruntlements. Otherwise, how do you explain the 1st Amendment wherein all three possible forms of "speech" -- spoken, written and by demonstration are addressed and protected? And what is the British parallel?

I would say that he lived so we could have the right to speak, but I wouldn't count his death on the list.

Everybody has a right to speak their minds, without being told that they "owe" somebody something for doing so.

What makes this country great is the CONSTITUTION and the BILL OF RIGHTS, two things that are being shat upon by the "leadership" in this country...

also, those are two things that were NOT "protected" by people dying in Vietnam, were not "protected" by our government supporting murderous thugs in places like El Salvador and Nicaragua, and most CERTAINLY are not being "protected" by this war, based upon cheap, shoddy lies, being waged in Iraq.

And later in the civil war, that all men are created equal, which gives them the equal right to speak up.

when someone hands me the "our soldiers are dying to give you the right to speak freely" line as a criticism of my speaking out against the war always is: "So why are you dishonoring their sacrifice?"
