William Bennett - longtime racist and fearmonger
"...in 1996, he co authored with Bennett and John DiIulio (who worked briefly as head o Bush's faith-based social-welfare initiative) one of the most controversial books of the last decade, decade, Body Count: Moral Poverty and How to Win America' War Against Crime and Drugs ( Simon Schuster ). The book raised a ruckus for its now-discredited warning that the deterioration of the social fabric was creating a generation of "super-predators," a class of underprivileged ( i.e.: black youth who had "a higher incidence serious drug use, more access to powerful firearms and fewer moral restraints than any such group in American history."

If Newt Gingrich has his way, you can be given the death penalty for 'trafficking' in two ounces of marijuana. Former 'Drug Czar' William Bennett (author of 'The Book ofVirtues'!) has advocated the public beheading of convicted drug offenders. LA Police Chief Daryl Gates has publicly stated that casual drug users should be taken from the court room and summarily executed. We are rapidly approaching a totalitarian police state, where absolute power flows directly from wealth, and any deviation from the officially mandated status quo can mean incarceration, torture or even death.

"In January the Center for Individual Rights (CIR) launched a national campaign urging students to sue their colleges for racial discrimination in admissions. The effort's National Press Club kickoff featured former Education Secretary William Bennett and none other than Nat Hentoff, a columnist with a liberal reputation. Hentoff's trip to Washington was paid for by the organizers from CIR, one of the hottest law groups of the new right.

The group placed advertisements in fifteen campus newspapers – including papers at Columbia, the University of Chicago, Dartmouth, Duke, Virginia, Rutgers, James Madison, the University of Pennsylvania and the University of North Carolina. The full-page ads advised students to download or send for a free handbook on how to tell whether their college is breaking the law. "Guilty by Admission," the ads declare. "Nearly Every Elite College in America Violates the Law. Does Yours?" The handbook tells students how to use freedom of information requests, how to acquire data from their university to compile complaints and then how to find a lawyer to bring a suit. This campaign represents the latest anti-affirmative action strategy on the right: targeting private universities that receive public money."

"The reauthorization of welfare reform should strive to restore a culture of marriage and family formation, which the President's reauthorization proposal would do through funding for marriage education. Few things would go farther towards re-enfranchising poverty-stricken black children than their being raised in intact families.

We know that eight out of ten children living in poverty live with a single parent; women who have children out of wedlock are ten times more likely to be on welfare than are married women; and a black child living with a single mother is 4.5 times more likely to live in poverty than a black child with married parents."

"Former Reagan Education Secretary William Bennett understood what was missing from the voucher political chemistry: minorities. If visible elements of the Black and Latino community could be ensnared in what was then a lily-white scheme, then the Right’s dream of a universal vouchers system to subsidize general privatization of education, might become a practical political project. More urgently, Bennett and other rightwing strategists saw that vouchers had the potential to drive a wedge between Blacks and teachers unions, cracking the Democratic Party coalition. In 1988, Bennett urged the Catholic Church to “seek out the poor, the disadvantaged…and take them in, educate them, and then ask society for fair recompense for your efforts” – vouchers. The game was on."

3. he's a douche bag. amazing that he can have a brother like he does. Last
night on Lionel some cracker called and after saying he was a 'psychiatrist' who had a 'black' in his house growing up, he tried to mitigate Bennett's position. Lionel bulldozed him and then ridiculed him in a cracker voice: "Yeah, growing up, I had a schnauzer, a dachshund and a black."

I am still laughing. Ridicule will destroy people like Bennett. I love Lionel.
