"Turman residents to move to hotel

By Susan McMillan
Executive Staff Writer
September 30, 2005

Nearly 150 freshmen from Turman North and East residence halls will move into a Marriott Hotel five miles from campus for the rest of the semester because of mold and moisture problems, Residence Life officials announced Tuesday.

They and their sophomore and resident advisers will live in hotel rooms with HBO, maid and laundry services and continental breakfasts but will not receive refunds. Students will travel the 20 minutes to campus on shuttles that will run every 15 minutes from 6:30 a.m. to 1 a.m. during the week.

The evacuation announcement came on the heels of similar mold problems in Turman South last month that forced all its residents to move into other halls.

“There’s nothing we can say that will make the fact that you’re having to leave your community suck any less,” said Steve Maddern, assistant director of Residence Life operations. “Being angry is an understandable response.”

****The university community has been tremendous in its support of evacuees, including the students, but it looks like the students are also getting a mild taste of what happened to the evacuees as well--hope that at least some of them will grow from it.
