Reuters: "Bush battling to climb out of popularity slump"

Bush battling to climb out of popularity slump

WASHINGTON, Oct 2 (Reuters) - U.S. President George W. Bush is battling to climb out of a slump caused by the slow federal response to Hurricane Katrina, the Iraq war and soaring gasoline prices, events that have all combined to damage his credibility and deflate Americans' confidence in him.

The strategy for getting his groove back, aides say, is to narrow his focus and tackle head-on those three top priorities -- hurricane recovery, Iraq and energy -- and set aside for now other items like Social Security and tax reform that he had expected to spend the fall on.

But all three priorities carry their own risks and challenges, with the cost of rebuilding New Orleans straining the U.S. budget and causing consternation among conservatives, American casualties rising in Iraq and gas prices showing no signs of dropping to pre-hurricane levels.

The strategy, said a senior administration official, is to "stay focused on what we're trying to accomplish and recognize that some of that is going to take some time to change."

"Doing his job has always been his strongest suit," said one adviser close to the White House. "Let Bush be Bush. Let him lead. It's what Bush does in times like these."

Yeah, sure, whatever. Maybe we really don't like where Dimson is leading us?

7. Doing his job has always been his strongest suit - what a laugh...
if bush leads in times like these then why isn't he leading? He has managed to make a mess of whatever he does and they call that leading. The only thing he is good at are photo ops to raise his ratings and supposedly talking with God.

3. Bush looks desperate and ONLY wanting to raise his numbers by going to the
hurricane sites now. It looks very phoney. In fact, it has back-fired on him. Think his handlers could see this.

9. Who says this stuff?
Sorry to dupe some of the quotes, but do you ever wonder WHO is making all of these statements to the writers or press?

Finally, a couple of names...
"Between the arrogance, the indictments and the general culture of corruption, it's really hard to decide where to begin. Republicans have no strategy and no plan. America can do better," said Rebecca Kirszner, spokeswoman for Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat. :)

10. "Let Bush be Bush" -- yeah, that'll work
Keep it up, republican strategemizers -- that's exactly what led to his "slump in popularity" in the first place.

The whole world saw Bush drop the ball on Katrina. He was either completely unaware of what was happening or he just didn't care. Either way his nonresponse made stunningly obvious how unfit he is for his job. People finally saw "Bush being Bush" and were repulsed. They've been so used to the prettified Bush, the Thomas-Kincaid-Master-of-Light™ version they've been hornswoggled by for the past 6 years.

12. Note that he's not going to do anything differently
Merely focus his lack of administrative talent on three primary areas. Finding himself in a hole, he digs harder.
