Update on the "Censorship" on "The Guy James Show" last night
My apologies to everyone who heard that we were not allowed to take calls from a couple of people who have been banned from our radio stations for their vocal Liberal views on the morning show.
As you know we do NOT screen our calls and anyone is allowed to call. During last evening show I was informed by our board operator that he had been informed by management of the station that we "were not to take calls" from a couple of our regular callers because they had called our rabid Right-Wing morning show and voiced their opinions about the morning host being racist because of her comments about people here not being "black enough" to get the same aid after Hurricane "Charlie" last year that is being given in New Orleans. In my opinion the comments were very racist and I voiced my opinion on them during last week's program.
We did not take the calls from the "banned" callers last evening because the board operator explained to me that he would lose his job if he allowed the callers on the air. I did not want him to lose his employment with the station because he is completely innocent in this whole matter and it would not be fair to him to have to suffer the consequences of my actions.
I will take up this matter with the management of the station this week. We buy our time and I don't feel they have any right whatsoever to tell us what calls we can take.
I just wanted to let our loyal listeners know that this action by the station is totally repugnant to me and I will deal with it this week in any fashion necessary.
This is just another of the difficulties of trying to do Liberal radio in a heavy-duty Republican area. Sponsors are afraid to spend their dollars on our show and censorship rears its ugly head. What next?
4. I don't know about the Guy James show but there is a
radio station here in St Louis where the hosts buy time and hustle for advertisers to help defray the costs. I used to listen to the station all day and all sorts of callers were allowed because basically it is the host's show to do with what he/she so desires.
3. thanks, guy, for insight to the real-life operation of censorship
imagine what the pressure must be in national and network media. this is an area where capital exercises it's muscle inappropriately. in a more sane world, there would be LAW to prevent this. the airwaves belong to all of us. we deserve protection from money-interests silencing the voice of the people.
6. Thats the reason I explained this to all of you
The pressures against Liberal radio are immense. Most people do not understand what an uphill battle we have ahead of us. Whether its my show or Ed Schultz or Air America.....all of us face obstacles that those on the Right do not experience. The intimidation from people on the Right is palpable. Not two weeks after we first started our program some three years ago we had the local Republicans tell us "we'll get you off the air by any means necessary". Well, they HAVE used just about every means necessary but, somehow, we've survived. As things stand right now I just hope we're not on death row.
