had another local candidate visit me today . . .
actually, it was the candidate's son, seeking my vote for his father, who happens to be running as a Democrat . . . as I did with previous visitors, I asked him one question: Who did his father vote for for president in the last election? . . .

HIM: Gee, I really don't know.

ME: Well, if you want my vote, find out. I'll tell you what I'm telling all the candidates: anyone who voted for Bush isn't smart enough to represent me.

HIM: (chuckling) Well, he IS a Democrat, so I'd be surprised if he voted for Bush.

ME: Well, get back to me.

and then he left . . . about 15 minutes later, the candidate himself knocked on the front door . . .

HIM: Are you the guy who wanted to know who I voted for for president?

ME: Yup . . . that's me.

HIM: Look, I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid. I voted for Kerry!

ME: Okay, then. I'll read your stuff and probably vote for you. If I have any other questions, can I call you?

HIM: By all means.

and that was that . . . and it felt s-o-o-o-o good . . . :)

1. Good for you!
I also hope you're very impressed that the candidate himself showed up after the son told him what you'd said.

Having run for office myself (and lost. I live in a place unfriendly to Democrats) I got a lot of satisfaction out of being responsive to the voters in similar ways.

It really is at the grass roots like this that we have any chance of winning back the country.

I definitley think that is true. And educating the voters as well. I think we've learned a lot since last year.

4. What an F-n Bitch
After he is elected, I hope he remembers your place, and nominates it for use by the town/city for emanate domain. You would not understand the meaning of that but would eventually find out. :-)

6. nasty? . . . not nasty at all . . . I am dead serious . . .
if a candidate didn't have enough brains to see through Bush in 2004, he is NOT smart enough to represent me . . . and will NOT get my vote under any circumstances . . . I was quite polite, but dead on serious with the guy . . .

and yes, I was impressed that the candidate took the time to come back to talk to me . . . he will likely get my vote, although I haven't yet had time to read his materials . . .

11. How do you know the candidate
didn't see through Bush and his crap in 2004? Didja ask him?

Look... I was a candidate more times then I wish to remember, I finally won my State Rep. seat in 1998. I kept it till 2004 when I deceided not to run again.

It pisses me off when people put canidates down. It's not an easy job to have- trust me.

8. Good for taking a stand with the canidates
Edited on Mon Oct-03-05 02:14 AM by FreedomAngel82
I remember the last mayoral election we had here in April both top canidates in the run-up voting came by and said hi and I got to speak to both of them. I already pretty much had my mind made up about who I was voting for (the guy won too!). When he came by my house to say hi I talked with him a little bit and asked him what party he was a part of. He said he was an independent since he had problems with both parties. That gave me some good confidence since I knew he wasn't a republican and the cool thing about this canidate is republicans and democrats worked together on his campaign to elect him (you can see him at http://www.ronlittlefield.com if you want). :) The guy who won took more time to really talk to my Mother and I though and was more serious about running. I think the other canidate only talked to my Mom a few minutes before leaving (that was her first ever politicial experience).

12. You tipped your hand
when you told the kid you wouldn't vote for anyone who voted for *. Of course the kid told his dad, and of course the dad came back and told you what you wanted to hear. Q.E.D.

15. What in the world is all this hostility
toward how you dealt with this candidate?

What exactly is this guy running for? Depending on the office, his party affiliation matters. So if he's a registered Democrat -- and I don't know about your state, but around here (Kansas) it's apparently possible to find out a person's voter registration status, included if they've switched party affiliations recently.

Yeah, maybe he lied and told you he voted for Kerry when he really voted for Bush, but his actual response "I may be crazy but I'm not stupid" certainly has the ring of truth to me.
