You know the Alabama state senator, Hank Erwin, that said that Hurricane Katrina was God's punishment? Well, it seems that his comments aren't going over too well with the people of Alabama. Sunday's Birmingham News LTTE were dominated by fed-up citizens smacking the dumb fuck upside the head.
Erwin's explanation that, "Sadly, innocents suffered along with the guilty," is flippant and offensive.
Being what I consider a conservative Republican, I have in the past gone into the voting booth and pulled a straight-party lever without much thought given to some of the candidates who happened to be running as Republicans... Please forgive me. I will do better in the future.
It must make him proud to know he's spouting the very same wrathful nonsense as al-Qaida.
After reading Sen. Hank Erwin's thinking as to the cause of the recent tragedies, I believe I can make a case that the United States is being punished by God for electing George W. Bush as president.
We in the inlands must be without sin. No hurricanes here. Oh, I forgot tornadoes, car wrecks, plane crashes, cancer, mental illness, AIDS and migraine headaches. God has all types of artillery.
I think I will stay inside and hide. But not from God. From the Hank Erwins of the world.
I read with concern the comments of Sen. Hank Erwin. As noted, his logic of "divine annihilation" was the same used by terrorists to kill more than 3,000 innocent people on 9/11.
It is a small step from belief to action, and his is a dangerous position that breeds divisiveness and reflects a level of ignorance that is appalling for an elected official.
Second, I am surprised that Erwin, a fine, upstanding Republican, is in complete agreement with al-Qaida. The terrorist group also says Katrina was God's punishment of America. Does the senator also agree that the events of 9/11 were God's efforts to punish us? Maybe he should ask al-Qaida's political action committee for a donation to his next campaign.
Finally, I hope the senator rethinks his comments and apologizes for them. It is a very dangerous road to go down when we start explaining terrible events by saying God is punishing someone. When people do that, they start accepting and even condoning horrible occurrences.
