Harriet Miers Nomination: "Let's Get Some Spine!" ---------->

"Democrats will never shed their image as timid accommodationists afraid of their own shadows until they start doing what an opposition party is supposed to do: oppose."

-- Paul Waldman, July 2005

"I know it's frustrating for many of you, it's frustrating for me. Why can't the Democrats do more to stop them? ... I mean, c'mon, toughen up, guys, it's only our Constitution and country at stake. Let's get some spine!"

-- Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, June 2005

"But if Mr. Bush continues to push his radical agenda, offering right-wing judicial nominees and environmental policies that threaten our air and water -Senate Democrats may have no option other than to obstruct. They should not shrink from that duty. Stop signs save lives."

-- James Carville and Paul Begala, May 2001

1. Appears Sen. Reid urged the selection. Now, why would he do that?

It's part of the rope-a-dope. Reid is an excellent chess player, apparently, as well as a former boxer, and his approval is sure to send the Right over the edge, which means... something. The fact that Cheney is making the Hate Radio rounds means that we've got 'em on the run (sound familiar?)

See, if Miers is seated and turns out to be a stealth Scalia, that's okay, because Bush's base is mad at him right now, which is obviously more important than any possible long term effect her judicial philosophy may have.

If she turns out to be an O'Connor-type conservative, the hardcore righties in Bush's base will still be mad at him.

If she comes out as being pretty conservative between now and her confirmation, the fire-breathers on the right will still be mad at Bush because she isn't a raging Bork clone.

This will somehow translate to sweeping Dem victories at the Congressional level for the forseeable future, and a Dem in the WH in '08.

Oh yeah, there's also something about dry powder....

3. If CNN is to be believed Congress doesn't even need any lubricant
to slide Miers through. Granted, that caveat needs to be examined carefully.

But Fienstein said she saw nothing negative with the nomination? How can anyone say that in good conscience considering Miers has never been a judge, is anti-choice, a Bush crony and has no record by which to weigh her potential performance and value as a Supreme Court Justice. She reeks of being a planted weapon for the far right.

4. "has never been a judge"
So? Michael Brown had no experience to head FEMA. Look how well that worked out.

:sarcasm:
