The Unbearable Irony of Being Paul Wolfowitz (the rights of women)
" . . . in this little arid village in northwest Burkina Faso. One of the most memorable impressions was this young Muslim woman who had been elected secretary of her village. And I asked her, 'Is it hard for a woman to be elected secretary of a Muslim village?' And she said, 'There's no way we'll make progress if women don't have equal rights or equal opportunities."

- Paul Wolfowitz, World Bank President, Institutional Investor magazine, September 2005, page 55.

"When we came back from exile, we thought we were going to improve rights and the position of women. But look what has happened - we have lost all the gains we made over the last 30 years. It's a big disappointment."

Safia Taleb al-Suhail, Laura Bush's 2005 "State of the Union" address companion, as quoted in August 2005.
