Hackett to Challenge DeWine for Senate
http://ap.tbo.com/ap/breaking/MGBVZ9KHDEE.html

WASHINGTON (AP) - Paul Hackett, the Iraq War veteran from Cincinnati who was hailed by national Democrats for his narrow loss this summer in a heavily Republican House district, has decided to challenge Mike DeWine for U.S. Senate in 2006.

Spokesman David Woodruff, who served as Hackett's campaign manager in his special election campaign for the 2nd District House seat against Jean Schmidt, confirmed Hackett's run Monday evening. Hackett had spent the last month hinting at a run against Ohio's senior senator, who is in his second six-year term.

Hackett was flying back Monday evening from Washington after meeting with Senate Democratic leader Harry Reid of Nevada and the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee, Woodruff said.

Reid's spokeswoman, Tessa Hefen, would not confirm or deny the meeting Monday, but Woodruff later said Reid gave Hackett the confidence to run.

3. Hell yeah!
This is great.

With the governor there at a dismal 15% approval rating, Ohio should be ripe for a bunch of Dem takeovers.

4. Maybe if Hackett..

7. time to get to work
I'm in Ohio now, and will soon have some time on my hands.

I'm in a red red county, but Gov. Taft is at 15% approval... this is our best chance to get a Dem in.

9. Woo hoo hoo!
More good news. It just keeps a comin'. I think he's got a solid chance (as long as Diebold doesn't steal the election). I'd love to see him in the Senate.

12. Who wants to make this bet with me??
DeWine 'retires' from his senate position to run for Governor of Ohio. With Taft floundering at 17% he's the best bet to keep Ohio with a red governor. (And Voinovich was already governor, DeWine has only be Lt. gov)

13. And Sherrod?
Sherrod Brown is a Congressman who has previously held state-wide office and has a huge war chest. He is a skilled campaigner and will not make the kinds of tactical errors Hackett made in the House race. (Calling Bush a chicken-hawk and being unyeilding on pro-choice may get traction here, but it did not win many friends in southern Ohio, a.k.a. 'upper Kentucky'. He did as well as he did because his opponent was also pretty much an amateur). President Gore was in Akron Friday raising money for Brown at a $1000/plate fundraiser. If Sherrod wins in the Senate, he could be president.

19. I heard on AAR
on Majority Report i think Sam was bringing it up; about the 'coin-gate' thing that may implicate a lot of people the Gov included;
can Hackett use that issue to beat this imcumbent about the head and shoulders?

just wondering

seems like the the Media would eat that up

24. I wonder . . .
What will Jerry Springer do now?

He spent big bucks to test the waters about re-entering politics and I thought he was planning to run against DeWine in 2006.

Will Springer challenge Hackett in the Dem primary?

Will Springer decide to take on another race (I remember hearing he explored going after Trent Lott in 2000)?
